Hi gents.
Looking at rebuilding an 066.
This unit is a small (oil) tank 066,but has a poly crank with the larger fw side seal.
I thought all small tanks had the small ally crank with the small seal.
I know you can't fit a poly crank in an ally saw as the poly crank is wider by about 5mm.
All the 066/660s I have worked on have been either small tank ally crank or large tank poly crank.
So is this just a production change over saw?
It also has a 3 leg (046?) style coil.
If the cylinder I got in a box of parts is from the above saw it is decomp.
Cheers Chris.

theres about 6 million types of 066/660 . the best way is to get your self the sin number off the one side of the crankcase and find out what kinda case you have . then work your way down from there . ( i just hope you have a good stihl dealer beacuse somtimes its a huge pain in the ass tracking down the right parts for it .

Yes, this is a transition saw and it is legit. For a short time, there was a flat-top, small oil tank, poly-flywheel saw. It's a strange animal. I bought one
myself new for my logging business I had at the time.

Are there any numbers on the ignition?

When looking over my saws years ago... I bought three 660 kits with three seals in each. Also got the 066 short case kit. Never used but one in those years, not my saw. Shows how tough that bottom end is. Knowing all my saws were big bearing made things much easier. Still a lot of different parts between those two models. My 660's are a within three years of each other making them all interchange on parts. Could not imagine seven or more models. Then ohsixfours o_O

I’d try the big seal and small gasket next :D

These things are so damn confusing. It’s a good thing that new parts are still available readily
It sure is, man. It’s also nice to have both size FW seals included in gasket kits. Now too bad they don’t have an extra case gasket, too lol.

Will get coil pic later.
Is this saw worth keeping or is it just another 066 to most people.

It's worth keeping if it has the original cylinder still in good shape. They had better port timing than the later 660's that came with "optimized" cylinder
and piston.

@jacob j.
So should it have the decomp Cylinder?
Also the top cover is flat with a decomp hole but has the rubber plug fitted, correct cover?

It should be a flat top with a compression release, corresponding hole in the top cover, with the rubber seal around the compression release boss.

No rubber seal but a rubber blank.
It had 2 cylinders in the box.
1 Mahle with the +++++ marks and 1 Stihl.
Also j can you look at my "Cylinder pit" post on the 'other' site and give a comment please.
Thanks in advance Chris.

I have a "short case" with the bigger crank in it. I got my "064/ early 066" gasket kit off of @Definitive Dave. I do not have a poly flywheel on it because it came with an aftermarket metal flywheel when I bought it. Mine as well is a flat top with a decomp hole in it.

Good luck in your rebuild!

Just looked on ebay the part number is 1122-007-1051. And someone from Australia "your neck of the woods" has one up for bid right now.
That may be a little easier for you to get with the whole Coronavirus thing going on. I don't know what the rules are on international shipping at this point.
