I actually prefer a 281 over a 288

Ok I gotta know why, I passed up a 281 in favor of a 288 builder recently, now I am second guessing myself.

:monoloco: Blasphemy!!!

I think I will have one of thee with me at the Central PA GTG so you can become a believer :)

Give me the 288. I had a pristine 064 that Randy ported. (By pristine I mean, it would pass for new) I decided on my second cutting that I didn't like the vibes. It made my hand tingle. I finished the cutting that day with my 288. Hands were happy, ears were happy (288 note.. second to none). I got rid of the 064 immediately. Ive discussed this in length with some fellas that have tried near everything, like I have, and it was unanimous that if it's a Stihl- get the 461 and port it. My favorite saw (which is a ugly ported 288, has sent many great saws to new homes, notably 2 ported 064s, ported 2188 west coast, and a 661cmr. I don't miss any of those saws, I would miss the 288.

Coming from you, that must be an impressive 288.
Also how can you sell a ported saw at all? I can bring myself to do it :)

I'm not a stihlhead by any means but at the Staples MN. getogether I ran an 064 & a 288 both ported in the same big red oak log and the 064 was clearly stronger.
Are you referring to Andy's saws?

181 cylinder is best for small chamber especially the thin ring version. I wouldn't want to cut the head off one of them. 281 now sure.

I agree....The early 81cc cylinders are some bad mo-fo's.

I'm a big fan of both those saws and have to say they're close in terms of power. The 288 is a little closer to my heart though...There's just something about those saws.:headbang:

288'$ all day long for me. There one of the greatest saws ever made. Got bored with my 66 and yeah rattled my hands reminded me of running a Jack hammer. Great saws but I'm with ya 288 for me.

Gotta extra one [emoji847]
I have 2. Run both very often. Unless a guy is a Stihl guy. They won't argue running a 288. They have gained a huge following. Legendary saw super rugged, lots of torque and fast. Even in today's saws not super heavy. Show up with a 288 and you will never be undersawed. Or made look silly.

The 066 needs mounts if it's vibrating.
I have new soft in mine and it still does it. The best one I've ran was the one you had with the mounts from Dave.

Some are definitely worse than others.
The mounts from dave are the best,It has to be real bad for me to notice one vibrating and generally it's old hard mounts or new hard mounts.

If the handle bar don't fit perfectly it will vib bad. If you have to pry on it to get the bolts started it will vib way more.

Yeah they were all good. Once in awhile I miss the 66, not because I'm lacking in a saw, but more sentimental ran them for years. They are dam good saws....
