I've learned that lesson the hard way. If you acquire a unknown unit that you want to make into a solid runner, go all the way to the crankshaft.....

I crank bearing if it lost the plastic cage that spaces the bearings ,may let all the balls go to one side making it pop on start ,but hard to roll over and not run ,i would split the case since you are this far in .

I have run the short game on rebuilds and got nipped to many times. Unknown saws, I would want to go bare bones to make sure everything is right. Why waste the time later if its not right. Peace of mind thing for me.

The bing has easily modified jets so it could have been run on methanol but I doubt it if he got it to run on pump gas. Usually if it runs methanol it will flood on pump gas.

Dave, you could eyeball the main jet - a big hole down thru the middle would give you an idea if it was modified.

I would swap on a known good carb. Also, if you want/NEED to get the compression down to get it started, stack some gaskets, which will effectively increase your chamber volume and raise your exhaust - both will reduce your compression in a hurry!

tldr well not all of it anyway.
anychance the head is squeezing the top of the cylinder? Maybe the chamfer on the head is acting like a forcing cone. the top of the bore may be out of round too.
