I've learned that lesson the hard way. If you acquire a unknown unit that you want to make into a solid runner, go all the way to the crankshaft.....
I crank bearing if it lost the plastic cage that spaces the bearings ,may let all the balls go to one side making it pop on start ,but hard to roll over and not run ,i would split the case since you are this far in .
I have run the short game on rebuilds and got nipped to many times. Unknown saws, I would want to go bare bones to make sure everything is right. Why waste the time later if its not right. Peace of mind thing for me.
