lets look at fuel mileage

lets say X= $25

lets say a stock saw cuts X amount of wood on a tank of gas in 45 minuets. user does 10 tanks a day. 45 min x 10 =450 min or 7.5 hours. Xx10=$250

lets say mod saw 1 cuts X +10%of wood on a tank of gas in 30 minuets. user now does 15 tanks in 7.5 hours. X+10%x15= $412.50

lets say mod saw 2 cuts 90% of X of wood on a tank of gas in 30 minuets, user does 15 tanks in 7.5 hours.Xx90%x15=$337.50

lets say mod saw 2 cuts a faster cookie then mod saw 1

what saw are you going to take to work?

If I made my living with a chainsaw I be taking modded saw #1 to work
But I don’t, so I use the grin factor...[emoji41]

Ok, so let's talk theory then. In my hybrid I left the uppers completely stock and didn't grind the lowers or tunnels at all. Put a little epoxy in to fill the small lip on the lowers instead of grinding it out.
Small case, tight lowers and uppers. Exhaust was only raised 1-1/2 degrees and intake dropped 6 degrees.

Which part of this makes it run so well?

There's no real easy way to answer that unless you want to explain a few more details. Ignition timing, carb, ignition timing, muffler... what was the port timing before and after.
Did I say ignition timing twice? Lol

Advanced 1/2 key
HD 17 B carb
Triple port muffler

Stock jug was 102 120 74
Ported is 102 122 80

Cut .022 off base, set squish to .019 I think

I would really enjoy watching someone follow @Red97's idea of honing a cylinder down to bare aluminum with one of the big bore 440 kits, and bore it out to 54mm or however far they can go.

I have a perfect candidate with plating so thin that it just blows off in the wind. I don't have a precision hone or aluminum polishing hones, so I can't do it myself.

Way to many variables in a saw.

No 2 jugs are exactly the same. Let alone the rest of the components making up the saw.

Those saws that just seem to feel "right" just happen to have all the variables falling in the right direction. And that all applies to stock saws.

For a ported saw, we as builders add a lot more variables to the equation.

If you want to say timing numbers are exactly the same on 10 of brand x jug.

I am talking about the volume of each port, along with the surface finish, radii in the corners, bevels. The list goes on to say the jugs are exactly the same.

Even if the difference is .001" x that by 10 different components. If it happens to fallm the right way. That saw will run better than the same saw that everything was .001" the other way.

What would be really fun would be to take 1 saw and send it to 5+ different builders have each builder do their favorite/best part then test that against a baseline.

Have a feeling that saw would likely be slightly ahead of a saw done by a single builder.

Or just a saw with a modified oiler
With a stock oiler, ever hear anyone say keep the air in longer for better fuel economy ? Saw builders north of me have to consider fuel economy ,the guys get dropped off in the woods via chopper to cut trees and can only pack so much stuff ,fuel included,
