038 muffler

I was thinking about doing a muff mod on the o38. I noticed its got a duel factory exhaust. Is it worth doing anything to it?

The main reason was i hate how the exhaust always blows on the case/clutch cover and discolors it. Mabe i just try to keep my saws too clean.

Put a vent on the other side. If you're lugging the 038 torque monster around, you might as well let it breathe. The baffle serves little purpose. Gut it!
Re tune appropriately. ..

That muffler is off an 038 magnum, I say run her like she is!! She won't gain all that much without hurting your ears from more exhaust work in my humble opinion

Hell with a muffler, pull the dern thing completely off and stick a piece of tubing on there.

Those are good you can make them louder but it wont gain much if any they did those right from the factory.

It is a magnum. It has hardly any hours on it. It is a good strong saw as is. Just didnt know if it would ga8n a little fr9m a mod till i noticed it was factory dual.

Should i take the screens out of it. I normally do.
And you think just cut that baffle thing out?

I like to think of the exhaust stain on stihl saws as an age indicator.

Extra exhaust ports are only for looks if the baffle is not allowing them to flow.

They aren't that loud with a completely gutted muffler ,no baffles ,diverters ,nothing but the shell ..Second port cut it even .---wear ear plugs----

On my mag that randy did with the 2 port with gutted baffle will drive you away with a hi pitched roar Just find a oem 3 port and its a little softer but runs the same

Not a rebuild. Its all original other then i cracked the chain brake handle few years ago and baught new pem one.
It was a relatives saw he got thrpugh insurance and never used it. I borowed it a couple times when it was newer. I finally asked him bumch of uears ago if i could by it. I got it for 400 bucks. Here new it was 1200.

This is from a 038 AV that I recently acquired. The back half of the muffler does not look original. It also has 2 exhaust ports on the clutch side. Not sure if the deflector is OEM but the muffler case does seem to be. I opened up a few holes in the baffle on the bottom side, like the shape of hole needed to install a pipe at a angle. Saw doesn't seem loud to me and I like to see the smoke go every which way on startup.
