That's crazy! How do the Mark2s compare to Mark1s?
I don’t really know. Haven’t been out long enough. I’m guessing they will have fewer bearing failures with the dished piston and no stuffers. But the ones using 50:1 with cheap gas station oil will probably suffer the same fate eventually

I know the clearance in the crank case is tight... I was half tempted to create spiral grooves in the case to help direct oil to the bearings... but, I figure I'll continue to run 32:1... if it fails, then changes will be made to this Mark2

32:1 is pretty much a safe bet in any saw…assuming quality oil :p

Hello everyone,

Rather than starting a new thread I thought I’d see what folks thoughts are on my 545 with similar issues, I understand I’ll need a new piston, but is the cylinder useable/salvageable? I think foreign matter ingestion, rather than crank bearing/air leak as it’s above the exhaust.

Scratches on cylinder are just noticeable with a finger nail except that big brown exhaust port fooker. The saw was running before but didn’t idle until warm and may have had high idle. I thought it was the auto tune taking time before adjusting for weather change as it wasn’t fluctuating. I’ve rebuilt and now it won’t run at all. But maybe as I cleaned it a bit the lack of residual fuel/oil won’t let me fire up. I’ve mainly used aspen, but it has on occasion had petrol oil mix through. It’s a back up saw so weighing up scrapping it or a piston only rebuild.

Also is the little tag on the exhaust side of the piston usual? Looks like it is a manufacturing remain, from water jet cutting or similar.

Thanks all,

Joe
