That is the over the counter retail price at any honest Stihl dealer for that piston according to their recent price guide. The part number supersedes a couple of previous numbers with slightly higher pricing for each..., presumably from different manufacturers prior to Stihl starting their own piston manufacturing. That dramatically lowered prices on many of their pistons. OEM Stihl pistons are now even less expensive than Meteor replacements for certain saws.

IMG_1166.JPG IMG_1167.JPG IMG_1170.JPG Catching on to the thread rules.

I picked up this Stihl 89 S today. The only thing I can find on it was one that was for sale in England I think, a couple years ago.
Serial Number is 4466522.
Anybody have information this model?
It pretty big. That's it next to a Husky 288xp

08 S - 56cc ?

Powerful saw, tho. There were several utility attachments for it including a post hole auger. The TS-350 chop saw is the same engine and you can still find it in use these days for cutting concrete.

Thanks Poge, I'll check with the local Stihl shops on Tuesday. Cylinder looks pretty good once I got the aluminum transfer out, the rest of the saw is cleaned up and ready to go back together once I get a piston and a couple of seals.

All the 08S engines were updated to a higher displacement and power from serial X 18 735 400 on.

Old version: cylinder with 47mm bore and 56 cm³ (2.5kw)
Newer version: cylinder with 49mm bore and 60 cm³ (2.7kw)

Stroke remained the same with 32mm on both versions. That change was in late 1988 (TI 42.1988)

Does yours have the German on the on switch and gas tank cap?

Pulled it off the shelf for a look-see and have both German and English on the fuel cap. On/Off switch is in English as is the choke position indicator cast in the cover. Clearly an earlier 56cc version as is yours.

As mentioned, this power head was also used for several implement attachments as well as one of the earlier chop saws. All in all pretty versatile for its day and TS350's are still around. (Good source for the SEM ignition module if yours is bad, btw.)

89cc top handle. pioneer 450.

And the 89cc top handle NU-17...(predecessor to the 450)

Cause they had only 2 saws the contra and the 08.
The 08 was their lightweight saw at this time.

To be fair, Stihl's first gas powered saw was introduced in 1929.

Nice. Does it run?

It does run! Well, it did.
I've spent some time on the recoil today. Changed the cord, the one in there was about 18". The problem is that it won't recoil while in the saw. With the cover off it seems pretty good. The palls that bite the fly wheel pushing were backwards, they would fly out when recoiling. I found a couple thin washers floating around behind the spring can.
I took a little off the bushing with the dremel until i could get the starter to spin freely by hand. But when I assembled it, it had a hard time recoiling. I started to take the starter cover, and when I loosed the third screw, the handle flew right back where it belonged. So i righted all three and then backed them off a turn or two. That seemed to work with repeatability. So I fueled it up, messed with the choke and the fast idle set and in 5 or 6 pulls it fire up and stalled. Tried it again and fired strong and ran long enough for me to goose it. But the recoil hadn't reset and the handle was dangling and then it caught, sucked back in and the saw stalled.
Opened it up and the spring got pulled straight around the anchor post. Obviously something's not right here.
Any suggestions?
Would pics help and what would you want to see?
