Comments on the 029 and 039's .They've cut lots of firewood and have served people very well .However as witnessed by the boxes of parts in my shed they won't hold up in professional tree service business .Those saws were purchased sometime back by two tree service companies when the worst ice storm in 50 years hit this area of Ohio .Within less than a year all but one or two were consigned to the parts boxes .

I cut with an 029 for over 20 years. No issues at all. I changed air filters and spark plug a few times. Only replaced fuel lines once. Served me well, as I cut well over 100 cord with that.
I sold it last year. Piston still had machine marks on it. A little carbon, that's about it.
I went through 2 bars and many chains. Lol

To the above let me remind you all in the tree service business during emergency situations they often hire less than experienced help, day laborers more or less .This most likely led to the demise of those saws .However in the time they were in use they more than paid for themselves .

I've seen em killed by experienced owners of tree services too..., many times. Have a pair of MS441's in my shop right now that have suffered that fate. One is a non-M and was simply smashed. The other one was an M and was smashed and straight gassed. Thought I could get one runner out of the whole mess but discovered both cases are cracked. Some pretty expensive negligence and abuse from a "professional".

Dude originally bought four of em at the same time which tells ya somethin' about the common sense factor right there. I've revived the other two for him in the past as well. Shoulda just bought MS461's for another couple hundred bux in the first place.

The 1127 series is pretty darned bullet proof for a plastic clamshell and even an 029/MS290 can benefit quite a bit from a simple muffler mod. The 039/MS390 can be made into a very strong saw with some minor exhaust work and a pop-up piston for very little money and a blown up 029/ms290 can be made into an 039/390 just by bolting on the 49mm 64cc top end gaining nearly half a horse with the same weight and can pull (and oil) a 24" bar all day long.

Out of all the saws this guy brought me the last time around, (6 of em), an MS310 was the only one that still actually ran.

Trimmers beat the snot out of them .I could over load the server with stories of some I've worked on .
One in praticular Stihl 038 Mag that survived over 20 years for a trimmer .Grenaded a piston .JJ sent me a brand new one ,back on the job in about 2 weeks and ran about 4 years until it was given to me only to be loaned back to that same trimmer when some SOB stole all his saws .Residing in my shed awaiting the call again .One tough old saw .

Thank you, the one i am looking at is NOT a prom queen... Seems it got into a couple of fights and although it might not have been a win it was a draw at best..
We see how much the current owner wants to re-home it...

Anyone know if Stihl makes a West Coast Cover for a 261cm? With captive bar nuts?

Not sure how many people have used an MS241C but that little saw is sweet. It is overpriced but worth it to me. I know alot of people just turn away from it due to the price as I did also until I used one. It will suprise you. It's like a calf with nuts like a bull.
I run the crap out of my 241. It's Stihl all stock for now. I think it was a bargain.

I am looking for recommendations for a piston to go in a 391. I am pretty sure the cylinder will clean up O.K. and the rest of the saw is good, maybe very good except for a couple of small cracks in the top cover.

Thanks,

Mark

The cylinder cleaned up nicely, where does one find the OEM $38 piston? I did a little Google searching but didn't find anything quite like that.
