Take the pullstart cover off and the plug out roll it over by hand and see if its in the engine , maybe look real good at the pull start assembly.
Feels /sounds good rolling over by hand. Starter pulley feels a bit sloppy.

I'll check the clutch side for anything obvious a little later. Heading out to the wood pile....

OP do the engagement pawls on the pullstart assembly open and come out easily when you move the pull cord the tips look hammered. Pull that starter assembly all apart and see what looks worn or out of alignment.

Make sure center bolt holding pulley is tight no play. A little grease that won't hurt plastic helps pawls work right. Here is one working nice on an 044 i did. Center pulley was really wobbly from loose screw. Maybe plastic that holds metal insert if I remember right that center bolt goes into is broken under the pulley. Pull center bolt first and check what's going on underneath.

I've had the rope get behind the pulpy of a husky. It would do it if the rope went back in fast enough. It's my personal Saw. I know about it now and I make sure it rewinds nice n easy like. Guess I should fix that sometime. I doubt it's an internal issue. The excess oil in there makes me think the bearings and like are likely fine.

Dan @paragonbuilder and I encountered a 365 special that acted like this yesterday. Thought is was starter cover when it turned out to be crank needle bearing. All sloppy with jug on sometimes turning flywheel over by hand it would essentially lock. Dan split the case and bearings are perfect. Jug is fine. Piston has what looks like one needle went by and locked ring from sheering by. Going to get a crank and piston and put it back together. 365 special is a cool saw.

I'll post some pics and such when 365 is clean and goes back together. Your 460 here problem didnt sound that much different until you found flywheel spins great by hand with no starter cover installed!

I've got a 460 here that does it. Locked up solid...
The saw runs beautifully when started, it only happens sometimes when it sits.
Essentially it's leaking fuel by the carb and hydro locking. Pull the plug and give it a few pulls, then pop it back when in and fire it up with the choke off. And it's back to perfect.
I need to rebuild the carb...

Your saw is junk. You had better give it to me for a proper disposal.
