Unless youre using a jackhammer, youre not gonna hurt that jug.
Get some 80-120 grit and sand the transfer off. No need for acid. Fark that sh!t.
When the transfer is gone or appears to be gone, check it with PineSol or Purple Power.
The caustic cleaners will turn the alum transfer a dark gray. Just let it sit a while. Heat will expedite the process.
When youre sure its gone, switch to 220-320 paper and pretty things up a bit.
Dont over think it.

I made a 1/8" split mandrel for my Dremel to speed up the sanding process.

If you watch Randys video, you'll see he isnt exactly handling that plating with kid gloves.

I've been reviving some very faded plastics on my 038 super with car plastics conditioner, autoglym rubber and vinyl or autofinnesse dressle. It's taken alot of applications, and they aren't 'as new' but are better than they were. I was considering a wet sand.

Wet sand and then there is a fine line that you can buff it with heat/speed before you melt the plastic to buggery. It can be done :) I have done it on spot fixes but not a whole cover etc..

Scotchbrite will not eat through the plating .Too coarse of a flap wheel will .Now that piston,a low spot usually won't hurt you but a high spot will because it breaks the surface tension of the oil film .You have to remember that piston skirt acts like a linear bearing .
On the other hand if you don't feel confident you could always buy a Meteor piston which comes with Caber rings and use the Stihl OEM circlips .

Good thread.
I’ve got a magnum II and love it. Great torque.
It’s not a saw you have to be gentle with and ejects noodles like a boss.
I use mine with an aggressive skip tooth square filled chain to cut bedding for
the chickens.

I don’t even know why I refer to it as bedding, they sleep up on a perch.
All they ever do to the bedding is chit on it.

Using hay at the moment, but usually saw chips and noodles.
I refuse to pay for the pine chips sold as bedding.

De-rail over, carry on.

No no, I love to hear about people using their noodles on their chickens...lol...

But seriously, I can't wait to get this one running. Should be a nice "just because" saw. Plus it helps fill out the "0xx" ranks which are growing in my collection.

Now I know it's not poly carb like car headlights, but faded lights can be wet sanded back, step down to a couple thousand grit, finish with a car polish and dual action polisher then' protect from UV with a wax or sealer.

20170306_231436.jpg This about the worse that can happen. See the spot below the port. I was more focused on the transfer by the transfer port that I over sanded here. That was 180 grit on a red neck mandrel.

Oregon makes kits for the Bing also .At one time the only place you get them was the almighty Stihl at premium prices which comes as no surprise .--like I've said in the past I've dealt with those people for decades and try as they might they never win .Never underestimate Yankee ingenuity .--We always win in the end .Hoorah and Amen:aplastao:

More than one way to skin a cat.

I still believe acid has its place, and if used correctly, isn’t quite as perilous as it’s made out to be.

I’ve had issues where sanding alone left transfer there and just polished it. It wasn’t noticed till much later, then it became 5 times the work to remove.

You definitely can sand through plating, especially around port edges.

Another thing to note is that the final finish needs to be smooth. The jug shown above (Dub11) has too coarse a finish to be to my liking. I’ve seen that type of finish chew up a soft aluminum piston skirt in no time.

The Meteor kit showed up, and looks great. I've gotta track down fuel and impulse lines for this 038M ASAP.

Update on the 015: poured fuel in and watched the fuel all pour out the front/bottom of the case. Ugh.
