I have my own gear for chainsaw work, no working in the wife`s kitchen...LOL
even have my own dishswaher in the old shop but turned down the heat so it don`t fade plastics. I want very hot water for cleaning the metal parts after grinding.

I have made that mistake with some Stihl orange parts. Came out really clean and also fooked.. Bathed them in fresh engine oil for a long while and it restored a bit of the lustre.

I'm thinking that setting up the squish is probably one of the next things to look at. Have got a motorcycle/go-kart tuning book (at home alas, but I'm at work right now) with a small table of squish clearances VS engine sizes. It seems to suggest that the squish clearance should increase with cubic capacity (clearly bigger piston crowns expand more than small).

With that in mind, what figures to you guys use on your 044/046 hybrids?

From what I've read here and there, 18-25 thou, and 18 has been on some 660's
But most peeps aim for the 20 mark.
But also on that note, but I'm sure your aware use the thinnest solder,

Not much to report of late....been really busy on various outdoor work....hectic year :(.

Anyway to date, I confirmed that I don't need to clearance the top of the casings (for the piston etc.). Didn't use clay, just bolted the jug down to either side and had a feel around:

Plenty of room: crankcase mouth further out than the jug's lead-in bevel.

Other news. Just knocked out the original bearings, and getting ready to prepare for tractor painting the casings.

Think the grey is a tad darker than the oem stihl. The white is a tad lighter than the oem stihl. Neither here nor there. You will see the ford white easier when cutting in the dark.. [emoji23][emoji23]

If you want to know how to print and make a degree wheel for free, go look at my Flying Tiger thread in the Rice Burner 660 section. It was easy, and I really liked the way it worked.

Do you guys use the 044 muffler or the 046 one?.........or are they the same?
How thick is that spacer?
Hi Sty

I'm gonna use the 044 muffler (suitably gutted of course!!) that come with the saw... and according to the man....it's a 0.1875" spacer

The larger 046/460 jug sticks out approx 0.1875" further than the 044/440 jug, creating a space that needs to filled.

@Sty57 it doesn't matter which muffler you use. You will need a spacer for the lower muffler bolts. TIL spacers are the cats meow for this or you can use a couple 1/4" or 5/16" nuts in a pinch.
The 044 muffler won't have an internal baffle.
The 046 muffler does. If you use an 046 muffler I'd recommend removing the baffle.

Finished re-spraying the cases with tractor paint. First time I've used this stuff.....hmm....not exactly a perfect result..but they do say that experience is something you have when you no longer need it ;)

They look pretty damn good to be honest. Anyway it will all be covered in bar oil and sawdust soon...
