Stopped in the Stihl dealer in Homer to see what they have. No used saws. All new from ms170(ce?) To ms661 and several in between. They're pretty proud of the Steals! Lol. $349 for an ms251....10.8 lbs 45 cc consumer saw. That's p.h.o. by the way. That's about the same price as a good used Echo cs352 or 400 and enough left to buy a Dolkita 7900 top end. :babeando:. :applaudit: You know they're rumored to cure cancer too right?

350 for an ms25x is steep when you can get a echo 490 for the same price and have an all around better saw. My 250 is a good reliable saw but cant compete with my 490. Both running 16" 3/8lp setups.

Is the 490 noticably stronger than the ms250 before the muffler mod? I hear the mm really wakes them up. Also, how does the 590 run after porting? Just curious. I have a 590 too stock except mm.

I cant answer that. When I realized the 490 muffler mod took 5 minutes and only needs a screw driver I did it almost right away.
The 590 probably make some of the best gains of any saw after porting. Echo left a lot on the table.

If you shop around, you can get a 590 for around $400.00, sometimes less. A lot of overstocks and display models get put on Fleabay.

I have a cs590. Paid $370 out the door brand new at the Tucson Echo dealer a couple years back. It's been a great saw. Tempted to have it ported. :)

Do it you'll be happy you did. Mine took a road trip to Tennessee and came back a different saw.

I see in your signature "ported by Del Eaves". Is that gentleman on the opeforum?
Del doesn't do porting for a living. I didn't ask him to do the saw. He offered to do it after I went looking for people's opinions on ported saws over on AS.

Del sounds like a heck of a nice guy. Very cool. You mentioned previously running 3/8 lp on the 490. Was that from the factory? I was looking for bar/chains and .325 kept coming up.

Same money i gave for my 490 back on January, can't believe what i got for 230$ nib.A friend of mine gave 400$ for a new ms 211,needless to say he got red face for a week when he saw the 490.Anyway for a 3/8 lp you must modifie a Stihl picco rim which is mini spline to fit the 490 small spline or buy an already modified one.

You can buy an Oregon standard 3/8 small spline rim (18720-7 tooth) which is a direct fit to your saw but some say that lp chain don't fit perfect on 3/8 rims and you might have exccesive wear on the chain or the rim.I run mine with 16" .325 058 bar/ chain and its perfect, light and fast.Whatever you decide look for a k095 bar which fit the 490 with minor grinding or a k041 which fits perfect.

Rim sprocket?!?! Awesome. This saw keeps getting better and it's not even here yet. Figured it had a spur like the 590. K095, isn't that husky small mount? Plenty of options there. Thanks for the info and part#s. Very helpful and appreciated.

Ouch. $400 for a 211. That's more than I paid for any one of my saws! Lol

I may try a 16" bar and some 3/8. Have about 50' of 72lgx left on the roll.

20181221_100641.jpg I got my rim from homelite410 on here. The bar is a 16" off a cs 310. I ran a bar off a poulan 2300 when I first did the conversion. Is it faster maybe. But if your in alot of limbing the lighter bar and chain setup is instantly noticeable in the handling of the saw.20181221_101110.jpg ready to cut weight tanks full,16" 3/8lp setup.

$400 will get you a real nice 036 around here. That's more then a Ms 250 costs new in my area.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, this saw is going to be primarily for limbing and just clearing smaller Willow and alders. Although I'm sure it will get burried in some larger spruce and Birch too. I like the setup your running. Very light! Bet it's balanced well too.
