I like the plastic handle, myself. It’s a lot easier on the a/v when the handle stays straight, vs a potentially bent aluminum one that has the springs or rubber mounts stretched/bent. Probably 10-20% of the saws I get in have a tweaked aluminum handle that needs some vise attention to make it better

Thanks for the good info Woodpecker. We have been thinking about using these saws on our fire crew and from everything we hear they may fit the bill perfectly. The part I am not sure about is using a 28" bar on it. That size of bar is standard for us up here in north Idaho. We'll use it for some brushing and limbing but they'll also get used for a fair amount of falling and bucking. Sometimes cutting through fire hardened woods or some big trees. We've got an abundance of those of here. Do you happen to know what the weight difference is between the 400 and 500i?

If I can find some time tomorrow I’ll give it a try with a 24 and a 28. I suspect it has the power for a 28 but I don’t know if the chassis will support it for regular use.

Here’s some more pics for you fellers…

balance with the 20” bar and chain.View attachment 310904

Ive never understood this. Unless you are swinging that thing one handed in the tree, whats the deal with “balanced”?

Hang a 28” Cannon on there and its gonna feel weird, maybe.

Oh for fück sake I’m just doing the best I can to describe the saw John. It’s an easy pic to take for those that care. The saw feels good with a 20” bar and chain on it. Probably feel just as good with a 24. I think it will feel pretty nose heavy with a 28, but that’s not the problem in my mind. I’m not sure the av stands up to regular 28” bar use. Maybe it will I just haven’t been using it that way. Probably won’t much either I have other saws for that.

Thank you for the review @Woodpecker. There was a 400 sitting on the shelf today when I stopped by to get some parts, it was calling my name but so was 261 adjustable carb, the 461, 241 & the 661. It was like the Sirens in mythology, trying to lure me in & wreck my bank account…

I thought the preferred balance on a saw was to have a slight tip down (nose heavy)? Rather than perfectly even?
