That is because between the tach's lead wire and the spark plug /spark plug cable ,a "capacitor" is formed.
But it's capacitance is low ( small conductive surfaces ) and proximity plays a crucial role then . A couple inches further away and the tach will not provide accurate measures anymore.Increasing conductive surfaces ( can not alter spark plug cable in that manner, thus the tach's lead wire is all left for altering ) will increase capacitance thus the tach will measure more accurately ,even a bit further away from the spark plug /spark plug cable.
The aforementioned aluminum tape wrapping "hack" ,is based at that principle ,essentially transforming the tach into a "wireless" one.
