Novice users shouldn't be burying anything except their pecker..but..this is the internet after all..so..he could try a ported 500i with every single thing west coast saws makes for it.

Or

A 362 c-m if he wants to experience pure ecstasy.

Never been much for the 5 series autotune saws but in a bunch ex- logging saws I aquired was a couple of 565's and a 2019 572 and fairly impressed- 572 is jusr a 565 with crank stuffers and a larger set of transfer covers, eased out the mufflers from the inside and sold the 565's but somewhat not wanting to sell the 572 yet- have a walker ported 372 - will sell the 572 eventuly but just put real dawgs on it and full wraps and put it to work for a bit.

For a novice user I'd think a 562 would work just fine and save a bit of weight. As long as it's not having to cut from both sides with a 24" often it will have plenty of power to run a 24" on a few cuts for the trunk and we all know the rest are going to be sub 20".

Too bad the 562 MK2 isn't available yet.

And, what level novice user?

A powerful chainsaw kicking back is not for the unsuspecting nor fainthearted.

Gotta be careful with equipment like this.

Just saying.

I’m not too fond of the 5-series huskies anymore, so I would second what was said earlier…an ms400 or 462.
What changed your mind? 462 is an awesome saw

Don’t get me wrong, the 5-series saws can be great. I just don’t really care for their running characteristics after getting used to some of my other saws. A ported 562 or 572 can be a real pleasure to run…but in stock form, I would take the 400 over the 572 for the size wood the OP mentioned.

I'm surprised not a single soul said a ported 30 year old 064 yet.

The internet is changing.
my answer should be the winner
we all know how much bigger of a saw is needed when you only need a 50 or 60 cc saw
husky lovers need bigger saws to go with their small peckers
so husky rule of thumb saw cc size is 1.5 cc size used
so 592 is the answer

I love when new guys join and ask about a saw to cut a few cords worth of 18" firewood sized logs and they get the ported 661/395 with a 36" cannon light bar type recommendations lol !

Ace hardware saws are outstanding if you do not need service, pay hundreds more to cut with same results, like waiting weeks to receive parts, like paying twice as much for parts, like saws that look beat after one month of continuous use. So ms400 or ms500i would fill his needs.

462 should be plenty, obviously if you have the extra cash a 500i. if you're just cutting firewood that should be more than enough. Depending on the scale of work and how often you will use it I wouldn't get carried away with anything too fancy. Just learn how to identify tension and compression on logs and how to keep that chain out of the dirt.

I guess I should mention it’s not for me. I’m somewhere above novice.

I pretty much figured 572, but thought I’d generate some discussion…worked out well cuz I forgot about the 565. Which I am ashamed of, sorry @afleetcommand 😉

I like overkill. Cutting with the dudes 450 was painful.
