I've rebuilt several of those with stuck ringsYes, it had a ring. It was stuck as you can imagine.
Don't know why but seems common

That'll buff out.Dug out my old West German 028av from under my bench where it's been hiding.
Pulled the jug. Scoring on corners of piston.

Seeing the jug has matching scoring and both are obsolete, Im contemplating what to do.
Might just get the couple av mounts it needs, carb kit, crank seals and run it until it quits, then reevaluate from there!
Saw ran with mix shot into carb prior to me tearing it apart.

That's awesome glad you're getting a hold on these things they can be a pain but there's no reason why they can't be great saw's just takes a little time is all. Lol.I just got done running an Asian 440 Big Bore in some Hickory, and I gotta tell you I'm pleased! I got it to run strong, with very low vibes, using the Big Bore P+C!!!
I feel like I finally have these things figured out, and since I have a few more of them still to be built.
I lowered the intake, improved the upper transfers and added bridge ports, and opened up the exhaust port. To reduce felt vibes I put 3 washers between the upper bushing and the saw, took the "torque" off of the top handle (otherwise it defeats the AV bushing). I figured out an easy way to cure the handle torque problem. Just remove the top handle, step on it with your left foot, and pull the side to the right a bit … don't over do it!!!
The only non kit parts: Stihl Elastostart rope/handle, piston pin, bearing, and clips, and a D Dave ZAMA/Walbro carb.
This saw also gave me extra troubles as the flywheel spun when I first started it, and I replaced the tank handle with another one (I think the fuel line may have been bad). It is very rewarding to finally have it running well!!!
I've usually not had any problems with the Asian 460 Brake Handles, but they get to you much faster if you find one that ships from within the States.
460 Handles are wider than 440 handles, but will work on a 440 if you space the left side out. They also provide a touch more clearance for the cylinder and muffler.
Is the one you have too narrow???
That is what I would do.
Then, I would also tell the seller to replace the one he sent you and ask for return postage for the one you received. Often, they will just let you keep it as the return postage cost more than a new part.
A pic from another angle, with the starter installed, would help to detail the problem.
