Thanks for the pics. I have a 5105 so hopefully it can avoid that fate.

If we can extend the definition of bench to the driveway, my daily driver 1998 Mazda 626 is up on jack stands getting a clutch right now. Everything is buttoned up and ready to go except for a left inner cv boot. Seems like no one can get me the correct one, it is a tripod joint and they keep giving me round ones. I went ahead and ordered an axle from Napa since it's only $55.00 with core and the car has 230k on the clock.

John Deere LT180, belongs to the boyfriend of a young lady that works in the store. He has been complaining of an oil leak for the past several weeks. I kept telling him to bring it in so I could fix it but he was always too busy to be bothered (owns a cabinet shop in town). Brought it in this morning, when I asked if he was tired of dumping oil in it he said that while mowing yesterday it started knocking. I pulled the dipstick, nothing, dumped a quart and a half in it, they only hold 1.8 with a new filter. Needless to say she is toast, new engine is $2300.00 (installed) and has to come from Deere. I managed to find him one brand new in the crate for $600.00 and told him that if he went and bought it I would install it for two hours labor plus materials.

Beaglebriar, I bought it used recently. I never noticed a year on the smog sticker, the serial number begins with 2011 so that seems likely to me.

Wow, he is going out with a country girl who is both hot and classy, then gets a $2300.00 engine for $600.00. Onan 18, you need to tell that young man to start playing horses and lotto!!

I had to cash in quite a few IOUs to get him that engine for that price. But that's ok, now I have a BIG one from him and Mama has been wanting new kitchen cabinets for a couple of years now. :D

Check the carb. If it has that epoxy crap on the jets get it off there and tune it proper.

Way ahead of ya, I found the correct adjustable carb for only $37.00 and bought it. Gonna give it a try as soon as I get all this vehicle and home repair stuff done.

Hmm, that LT-180 must be a heckuva riding mower. For the retail price of that new engine you can buy a nice Ford N series or Ferguson TO-30 any day around here. I gave $3400.00 for my TO-35 and probably paid too much!

He has a bagger for it and everything, I believe that it was ~$4,000.00 when it was new.

Deere is really proud of their green paint. Even the ones that they don't build themselves sell for a lot more, just because of the name on them.

Yep. And hence the reason I bought a JD 317, used. Ran the old Kohler KT17 Series I until it broke a rod due to mowing on side hills. (yes, didn't pay much for the tractor and figured it would be a Series I)

Put a Briggs Vanguard 18 V twin in. You can have the mower deck on, and slam the stick full forward and it'll pull the front wheels off the ground. Old Kohler didn't have that much balls...

The only JD I have is a 1989 STX38. It runs and is complete, garage kept suburban machine. Got it for $125.00 with a busted transaxle. Already got the transaxle, add it to about 40 other things waiting to be fixed.

Dad had a little two cylinder JD tractor from the 50's when I was a kid. Neat machine, love that pop-pop-pop sound. Still like my Fergies better though.

Love the sound of those old twin cylinder JD's... very distinct... guy nearby has some old tractors and has a couple of those... drives them down the road every now and then.

My neighbor had a STX38 for a long time... couple years ago, the electrical system fried itself. He ended up buying a new D series, 110 I think, from the dealer nearby. He knows how to haggle though and got it for a good deal. But, it still cost as much as a 317 with a Briggs swap. Plus he had to deactivate a stupid amount of safety devices on that thing so it wouldn't shut off when he moved over in the seat to mow side hills...
