I typically buy Oregon chains and files, and have some random husky, stihl, and an expensive Nicholas 7/32 which I bought because it was the only one available. The long and short is I’ve had a chainsaw for almost 20 years, but only recently started cutting wood for home heat so I can’t comment due to a lack of experience.
On a side note, I have recently noticed Nicholas files aren’t what they used to be. I have a flat bastard file that I might have used to touch up a lawn mower blade and four axes and it’s done. No dirt or rust, carded regularly, and its done. I was quite disappointed. It’ll put it in the ‘later’ bin for future projects.
