I typically buy Oregon chains and files, and have some random husky, stihl, and an expensive Nicholas 7/32 which I bought because it was the only one available. The long and short is I’ve had a chainsaw for almost 20 years, but only recently started cutting wood for home heat so I can’t comment due to a lack of experience.
On a side note, I have recently noticed Nicholas files aren’t what they used to be. I have a flat bastard file that I might have used to touch up a lawn mower blade and four axes and it’s done. No dirt or rust, carded regularly, and its done. I was quite disappointed. It’ll put it in the ‘later’ bin for future projects.

I chanced upon 3 dozen 1/4" files that are used on 1/2" chain .Those were Obergs .If I'm not mistaken made in Sweden. The old timers say these were the best .

If nothing else an old flat file is good stock for knife blades but it has to be retempered .Left as a file it's too brittle for a good blade . That's the thing about high carbon steel .all it takes is heat and quench at the right temperature and you can make it soft as lead or hard as a rock a number of times .
