I've owned a pile of 80 and 60 series land cruisers. A couple of them were right hand drive, imported into Canada. Though the 1hd-t and 12-ht were interesting, they weren't all that special and very difficult to source parts for. These nutless-wonder toyota diesels both pulled about 16-17 mpg. Neither approached 300 ft lbs of torque.

Random land cruiser memory:

Built an fj 60 for a movie where they would be doing action scenes with Jason Mamoa's big, arrogant ass in the back, with a half ton of camera gear and crew. I was afraid they'd tip it. So I rebuilt the stock-height leaf springs with modified f-350 add-a-leaves, installed a rear sway bar, and installed all new perch, shackle and spring bushings. The name of the movie was Sugar Mountain, by Yellow Brick Films.

Anyhow, our 300 ford inline six or 292 chevy inline six can be built for 1/4 the cost and they blow the doors off the landcruiser diesels. Much better work engines for towing.

Then my 6bt cummins-powered dodge exceeded the overseas toyota diesels with nearly double the torque and pulled better than 20 mpg.

My 1GR-FE powered Hilux has been an awesome Ute. In 17 years apart from servicing filters/oils/ plugs which I do myself not paying scaming dealers to do that. I've only put in one set of front brake pads and a throw out bearing and a few sets of tyres my brother owns a hoist and tyre changer/balancer.
The 4L V6 puts out about 250hp and around 280-290 lbs torque very reliable engines is a few kicking around with a million k's on em now.
Paid about 28k new in 2008. Is no way I'd pay the stupid money manufacturers want for their unreliable impractical junk nowadays.

I have the 4L V6 in my 2012 Tacoma. It now has over 200,000.00 miles on it and hasn't missed a beat. My only compliant is the thing gets dog *s-word mileage. 15-17mpg with mostly highway driving.

It's hard to believe those Yota diesels get *s-word mileage.

Yeah wasn't so bad when I bought mine in 08 when fuel was literally half the price it is now.

Yep, them 80 series are full time 4wd. with today's fuel prices, that's just nonsense.

The 60 series which is shaped like a cinder block, the auto tranmission is a total fkn slush box, sucks up lots of power . Then the h-55 5 speed manual has a low 5th gear. A 12 ht powered 60 series running 55-60 mph with the h-55 five speed, gives decent fuel economy.

Well actually it's a hotly debated topic putting 2T oil in older diesel vehicles even more so than what is the bestest chainsaw oil.. 😆

In my region it is said to pour 0.1 liter of 2-stroke oil in a tank full of "modern" diesel fuel in old school atmospheric diesel engine powered vehicles.

Something about modern diesel fuel being less oily and seizing up old school fuel Bosch pumps.

Here in the US, they mandated ultra-low sulfur content in our diesel fuel. The sulfur contributed to the lubrication of older mechanical injection pumps in the old diesels. This is why some oil added to the diesel isn't a bad idea.

I've personally seen two older Perkins diesel engines and a 4BT Cummins lose the injection pump, both attributed to poor lubrication by the fuel.

Now it makes sense your talking about the old jeep style ones sold in the US.

To clear things up,

Fj40's and a "low profile" FJ55 or "Iron Pig":
