@Woodslasher 'member my 6100? Imagine if it was 80cc and light for it's ccs. :-D You need to run my 7900.

For the point of this thread (just generating some discussion) IMO, ccs translate more to how much bar length you can run vs. speed, unless the cc increase is so significant that you can run an 8 pin for speed. Testing by @Redbull661 and @TreeMonkey85 I think has shown not much increase in speed from larger rims, at least not in larger wood though.

I want as much power/bar length as I can carry for a significant amount of time, and for me that's a light 80cc...unless the trees are small of course.
Not a huge difference.

A 70cc that is the size of a 60cc
That I can use for anything
And can be bought inexpensively
Is all I need.
Dolmar can suck it after how they treated local customers
When their saws fried because of dolmars epoxied carbs.
They wouldn't honor any warranties.

I'm referring to the 7900. ;-)
I don't get this threads topic. o_O

Isn't the 7900 THE 70cc saw to own being on the brink of 80cc?
Her sibling the 7300 has noticeably better fuel economy without missing out much on the 7900's power.
Both saws handle a 36" bar very well, they feature minor in cut characteristics.

This threads topic is similar to asking what the purpose of a 56cc saw is when there are 50cc and 60cc saws.
I am referring to the PS-550/EA5600 compared to the PS-5105/EA5000 and PS-6100/EA6100.
Between the three I keep grabbing my PS-550.

Keep a set of av mounts handy.
A complete AV mount set for the 7k Dolmar series is just 15€uro.
I only broke two cylinder AV springs on mine so far.

MMWS461 + h.o. oiler, 36" bar, RMF chain (stumping chain, not the fastest but it was handy, ), fully buried in red oak. Anything bigger/heavier is unnecessary around here. It pulls 32" full comp RS chain just fine, too.

Well…

With the PS7900/7910 dealer support for Dolmar in a lot of places is questionable at best. I can walk into five places within 15 miles of my shop and have an air filter, bar, chain, bar nuts, or any of the minor parts for an MS 440 to 462, and a few less for a 372, 576 or 572. And the later 7910s were outperformed by 70 cc saws stock for stock anyway.

As far as the 500i is concerned, I don’t know. The air filter is borderline unacceptable and flat out is in certain situations, and the AV is floppy. I know there are aftermarket parts that rectify these issues, but that’s $150 in parts and my time installing them after spending over $1300 on a chainsaw. Almost a good enough reason to either keep running my 441 & 461 or run a 462.

To answer the title question, it’s a good all-round size. Enough power to pull long(er) bars in the 32” range, which means you can get into some bigger trees comfortably, but they’re still fairly nimble in the brush and light enough to sling all day. Especially saws like the 044/MS 440, 372XP OE and the MS 462. Even the 572, 441 and 046/MS 461 are comfortable and run longer bars than the “small” 70 cc saws.

70cc saws from what the history books look like was an industry bench mark from the previous generation of boat anchors.

As for whats what and who identifies as what is another story.

After 10 or 15 years we will see if these saws are any good

I’ve come to the conclusion, if a saw lasts 10 - 15 years of constant use, it will be time to trade it in for a newer version anyway. More power, lighter etc. old saws are fun, but the newer saws run circles around them. If my saw dies in 10-15 years that’s served it’s purpose and I’d be happy. Besides who doesn’t want a new saw every so often!

I agree. We replace vehicles, tools, shoes, clothes, along with almost everything else when it’s unrepairable, worn out or the cost of ownership becomes too high, and a chainsaw is no different.

I built my 372 for $260. I’m looking for the 7900 or 500i build in that range if anybody’s selling…
Also keep an eye out for a 681. I guess you can tig weld the cranks to improve...? I might try one.

8 pin 28" and it gets down. Mufflers opened up but it's all stock with the HD filter.

@huskyboy you have a picture of what's happening to the plastic oiler screw?
There is a round plastic nub with a square end on the end of the control bolt. That square end rounds off after a couple hundred hours and you go from oiling plenty on a 32 to barely oiling a 24
