Glad you posted this. I have rebuilt three Stihl 661's but never replaced the cylinder or piston -- just about everything else. All the 661 parts cost an arm and a leg from the dealer. That's what produces stuff like this. The 661 has a slightly larger bore than a 660 (same as a 660 big-bore P/C kit) but a smaller stroke so that 660 engine parts will not work on a 661.

I’m guessing it’s like the MS341 vs 361. For the life of me, I don’t understand why they would have those open port cylinders.

I did an open vs closed port MS361 build and the open one was a turd, it limits where the uppers can be placed vs the closed port. And they supplied a late model 361 with the 341 open ports from the factory.
