I cut down the vent just far enough to clear the filter housing, then close over the top with a soldering iron with a flat blade attached. On the first few I put a small piece of brass ink pen refill in across the top and closed it over, found this is not really necessary and have done 5 more without the brass furrel. The cut down vent allows a MS260 airfilter to be utilized on the older small filter 026`s, the MS filter is a good deal wider and gives more airfilter surface area for air to flow into the 026. I also do a lot of interior modifications to the MS 260 airfilters now to get a good deal more air to the carb.

The 024/026's are plentiful around here. I have never seen a 346 in person. The Stihl name helps them move out this way too. I prefer my Husqvarna saws, but I have a few Stihls I am partial to. My 024 is one of them.

Over the years I have modified the 026`s much further than I have ever modified any other saw model, it takes me about a week to carry out all the modifications on my latest creation but its about all the saw I need for the wood I cut. I have about 45 running Stihl saws from 009 on up to 090`s, most models in between and I pick my modded 026`s up most of the time.

I like it, is there a method? Or just cut it and burn it? I see the angle in Al's pic
Guessing just to clear the 260 filter

So... What is the hack to fit 026 old AF covers on the 260 filters?

Great info appreciated Basher!
I haven't done this, but I think you can swap the aluminum nuts from the old style filter onto the newer filter. The old style have a shoulder for the knob to grab. The new style cover knob grabs a nub on the filter itself not the nuts. The nub will need sliced off for the old cover to fit.

I am waiting on impulse lines and the new rim sprockets to show up as well. I will post the outcome once everything is back together. The day job is also taking up most of my saw repair time as well. At work right now...
