Has anyone done this? Seems like it could be done fairly easily. Surely someone has done this back when those saws were first coming out. I had a pair of old 024 builder saws and I've got a pile of 028s of every sub model. The 024s both needed a new piston and cylinder. Both were 42mm bore if I recall correctly. I had on hand from the 028 super a good OEM 46mm top end. The 024 uses a 1mm longer stroke then the 028 super. I believe the result would be roughly a 55-56cc 024.
The cylinder bolt patterns are the same. It looks like the 028 could be modified to work on the 024.
The 028 piston skirt is way to long. It hits the case and crank counter weights. I chucked the piston up in the lathe knocked the skirt down so it clears now.
Still not sure if it will even work but with very minor cooling fin and cylinder clearancing it will bolt right on now. Over the weekend maybe I'll have some time to mess with it.

Surely someone have gotten this work. I searched and couldn't find any info on it anywhere.

Picture of the 028super cylinder on the 024 case.

If you could get it to work with a different piston, that would be cool. The 028 super piston has that huge dome, and IMO ruins that saw.

If the stroke on the 024 crank is longer, perhaps the dome could get machined off? I could see a warm 55cc 024 hybrid being a riot to run in the woodpile

Surely you will find where it's been tried before if you search hard enough. I thought I saw an attempt that didn't work out. The 028 just isn't that good, except maybe if you put lots of time and effort into experimenting with everything you possibly can. I ported a 028 super, and it wasn't that hot, but a stock 028 WB with a properly filed chain can cut amazingly well for a stock saw.

I searched high and low and even googled. I found several conversations discussing the combination but never anyone ever attempting it. The 024 stroke is 1mm longer. I don't think it would be a race saw or anything. I just wonder if it's possible really.

Would need to look at them but the Stihl 029/290 piston is 46mm and so is the ms 191t and that looks short with a flat top

I tried cutting down the 028 piston. Absolutely no skirt left on it to clear the crankshaft counter weights. I've been thinking about possibly a husky 55 piston

Yeah and now that I look closer the 191t won’t work ring locators all wrong for sure. 034 standard piston is 46mm and so is the standard 029 piston and they both have the proper wrist pin diameter. I think I have all three pistons 028s, 034 and 290/029 super so I can put all three side by side to compare pin to some ect.
