File mostly.
Got pretty good at it but never made one bigger than 020 or so,that's 4 sheets of paper thick and then I'd use compound on the band to match everything

No joking, this squish band was cut by hand using only a chisel. No sanding or finish work other than what the one chisel was capable of. Squish is level to within .0005

The best I can describe is it's like the facets on a gem. If one is uneven the reflection wouldn't be perfect.
If you take a squish band cut by a lathe and polish it the finish will have a mirror like reflection. A bent mirror distorts the image so it's easy to tell if it is a straight surface.
