Timing numbers off the cuff without knowing the carb size. 98/116/78?

Very close guesstimate. 102/122/75
Carb is getting a boost, but started life as HDA-50 15mm.

How many guys take the time to case match? Do these little details matter? Or are they a waste of time?

Everything adds up Josh. How much difference it really matters is beside the point........if it makes 2%........and a bit of carb works makes another 2%.........then the transfer details make another 2%.......well.......

Been trying hard to stimulate some discussion and show some things that beginners might not consiser or pick up on.

I was happy to see Randy felt the details add up!

Anyhow, onward with my build thread.

I am sure some folks saw my DIY gasket thread in the technical forum.

I split cases and installed new bearings/seal. The 575 uses a gasket, and restoring that gasket was important to me - I didn't want to halfass it and use sealer as clearance could become an issue.

As a rule, Shindaiwa has impeccable castings and precision machining. Case halves can be mixed and matched...no need to keep them together or replace as a set. I have only seen one thread stripped in hundreds of saws across my bench.

These saws use 6 bolts to hold the case halves together - 4 around crankcase, 2 long bolts up front that also hold the bucking spike. You can see these in the photo below. Note the black rubber oil pump gasket.

I like the case matching, especially on the saws that you can. Mastermind stated it best, if it's a gain, it is a plus. I have done this on the husky 50's, 346,365, 372 and 385.

I cannot say I've test all or the gain was there except on the husky 50 or Jred 590. I also know the way you mounted the cylinder to the case and marked the imperfection is the truest way as the the ole' gasket trick can be misleading.

So now is the big question, are you going to modify the piston? Inquiring minds want to know.

The black washer protects the seal and provides a smooth surface for the oil pump worm gear to side load against.

Then the chip cover screws down and protects this area. There is a metal shield that attaches to the clutch drum and covers the center hole when installed.

I will leave that up to the recipient of the saw. If the recipient isn't in a hurry, I will keep the saw and test/tune the piston mods. If they want the saw right away, I will send it with the piston in stock form.

I will admit to being way farther behind than I wanted to be.
