I'm pretty much set on the MS360. I've always been a Stihlhead, so there is that. Although I really would like to see it with a bigger carb, I'm beginning to understand the Zama carbs, so that might not be a bad thing anyway.

There's gonna be quite a few. I'm gonna have to figure out a way to stand out.

Utah, unfortunately.....
Very cool thread, Josh.

I guess I need to work on getting a nice Shindaiwa......oh wait, my almost 10 year old runs a 377 that Clint Graham bought for him. Well, I still need one...

Josh is meticulous in his builds, and the Olympyk 272F in my garage is proof of that.

I went through and surveyed my builders.

These saws have a magnesium case, tank and side cover. They all show varying degrees of wear.

I wanted to ask the group if they prefer a worn in look, complete with patina? Or PSP perfect?

I will gladly bead blast and paint the parts using perfectly matched implement enamel, over top of etching primer. It holds up decent, and wears in around the edges like a saw should.

Great read here, Shindaiwa's from what I've seen are as professional as any other brand. Worked over one a couple years back, 577 if memory serves. Was a very strong running saw, surprised a few folks that tried it. Still out there cutting firewood as far as I know. I'd never pass one up that came my way, that's for darn sure. Good luck with your build, sure it will be a dandy.

I built myself a new degree wheel for this very special project!

20161116_193916-1.jpg

I downloaded the high resolution photo online. Inserted it into a word document and used the ruler to resize it to the dimensions I wanted. Printed, cut and laminated. Affixed 2 sided tape. Cut some scrap Plexiglas with a fly cutter. Stuck laminated photo to Plexiglas. Used a bolt and jam nut to hold the wheel tight, then threaded into a Jacobs chuck I picked out of the clearance bin of my local hardware store.

Perhaps that was intuitive to most of you? But if my description helps or encourages someone to build their own degree wheel and modify their first saw, mission accomplished!

Being a classic guy myself, I enjoy your choice of a vintage machine for this saw exchange! They don't build them like they used to!

Hey Santa, when is the drawing going to take place?

I've dug through my stash of all things Shindaiwa and picked out the best bits and pieces for this build. They aren't all perfect, but neither are we.

The tanks on these saws are magnesium. They corrode externally when stored on the floor, and can corrode internally from water (ethanol fuel) and from being shelved in a humid environment.

My trick to cleaning the inside of the tank is to fill with a 1:3 mix of muriatic acid and hot water. Wear your PPE if you try this...rubber gloves, goggles, and do it outside as the vapors are nasty! Make sure the tank can vent rapidly - I put the cap on, and leave the fuel like and tank vent removed!

Seems 10 minutes does the trick and takes care of everything that needs to come out.

These saws have, perhaps, the best saw muffler ever made! They are furnace brazed, have an internal baffle with ten 1/2" holes dividing the front and rear in half, a huge side outlet, and an easily modified deflector. Enough to make any poor soul who has worked on a 7910 or 5101 Dolmar muffler jealous!

This muffler was cooked out in my wood stove to turn the oil and sawdust to ash. Then into my bead blaster. It's ready for some high temp paint.

That's a lot different than my 757.

Sure is! The thought and engineering that went into these saws resulted in a refined product.

An old neighbor from where I gre up used to own a landscaping business before he hung it up to work for UPS. As a result, he had darn fine equipment in His OPE. He owned 2 saws, an old Remington (No clue on model but 14" bar and (LOUD!!!!!) and a 575 Shinny. That saw was the first "modern design" saw I ever used and ran like a striped-@$$'ed ape. I don't know if he still has it or not, but I'd love to buy it, if/when he sells it, just because.
