I've got a 281 that I want to bypass the governor. Any chance you can talk me through it?
Great thread by the way. :applaudit:

And then it happened...........

Saw was running great, strong as an ox, even with muffs on I could hear the exhaust singing and the uni filter gulping. I kept checking my tune, listening for the four stroke very often. I was intoxicated by the smell of the VP, reminded me of racing in my youth. I noticed the chain was loosing it's edge, still cutting, but not as sharp. I wanted to get a few more cuts in before quitting.

Suddenly I heard a funny noise, and before I could shut it down a POP, and the saw died.....

I feared the worst, sat the saw down, grabbed the pull rope and gave a gentle tug, and nothing, no resistance, sounded like a tin can full of marbles. I'm sure people in the next county could hear me cussing.

What went wrong ? What did I do ! Back to the shop to tear down and inspect.

That's when I realized it was my lucky day, I must not have tightened the flywheel enough. So the nut backed off and it sheared the key. Shewwww.

Cleaned out the slivers, rocked the key enough to line up the flywheel and tightened the bejesus out of it. Fired right back up, we are in business again after a quick touch up on the chain and a refuel.

@weedkilla On this carb all I had to do is pull the big brass plug on the side. Put something in there to block it off. I used an welch plug I sanded down a bit to fit the hole. I have heard of other guys using a paper hole punch and a piece of beer/pop can. This is a before cleaning picture to show you the plug I'm talking about. It was easier to get out if I pulled the choke shaft out of the carb first.

You think somebody already turned it @Mastermind ? There's a few things on this saw that lead me to think it was somebody's toy at one time.

The 181 jugs look like that stock. If you really wanna make that thing a beast- have an 064 piston turned down with a small pop-up. You can get 200psi out of it easily and it runs decent with the stock port timing.

Sounds interesting, what's the advantage of the 064 piston over the stock 181 piston ?

It's taller. I prefer the two rings over one also since I build my machines to work. I've put an 064 piston in a Jonsered 820 and an 066 piston in a Jonsered 930 as well.

I gotcha, taller crown height. So you turn it down to stock height but leave a pop up.

Nothing ugly duckling about it. If you want distressed furniture or a new guitar that looks like it was played in a smoky bar for 40 years cig burns and all, you pay more for it! Go figure. We we're waiting on a train one day and it was creeping. Just happened to be in front of a furniture store. She wanted to go in. So this distressed furniture they had, you could tell it was going past a mandrel loaded with a whip made out of barbed wire where they were tearing stuff up in the factory. Thanks for hitting my new stuff with barbed wire looks so nice.

Probably some hipster in the woodwork who would like it better with the old Husky patina.

I don't mind the looks of a saw, it's a saw, it was made to work and obviously that's what it's done. I'm not into the PSP crowd, just the same as in not into car shows. Do I have an old car, yes, do I show it , nope, I drive it every chance I get.
I never got the whole relic guitar thing either, you want a worn out guitar, play that sum *b-word and earn those stripes yourself. I had a buddy who worked in a furniture shop. They kept a cloth sack of some sorts with pieces of log chain in it for those special customers that wanted "that look".

Haha. Yep. M_M, the relic guitar art came out of the science of matching new repairs to an aged finish. You can't refinish the whole guitar so they had to relic the repair. I've got an old set of keys that were my Dad's mounted on a spindle made from a paint can opener. I experimented with it by chucking it up in a drill and whacking some scraps. Don't think I have the heart to do it to a new piece. Dang those relic Tele's and stuff are goin' for a fortune. Instant everything these days.

S-81 Nash. Brand New.

I be had several guys ask me to build relic guitars or relic new guitars. I won't do it , now ageing a new piece to put on an old guitar is a different story. That's an art that sets many repairmen apart and something I enjoy.
