Yea, the popup 390 would vibrate a lot considering the stiff rubber anti vibe buffers and a heavier than stock piston (metal added popup vs metal removed) on the same size counter weighted shaft. A non strato saw with spring mounts would be best because with a popup modified piston, and removal of the side skirts (if it has any) will lighten the stock piston to reduce vibration. I think a 490 fits the bill, not sure about a 260 if it has springs or not, and a 261 has a strato ported piston, so it might vibrate more.

I skipped the 60cc classes
I'm in the 70cc class nearly the same weight.
15 of them for some reason.

I did just the opposite too many times.

Would enjoy getting back to that 044 with five top ends sitting in a crate next to the 460's. Winters coming and three of the 361 are getting rebuilt and jacked way up. The others....the song remains the same, daily drivers with some mods. I got too many options there.

The ultimate firewood saw? roughly 11.5-12.5 lbs, 70-100 cc's, at least 6 hp, amazing anti-vibe, telepathic throttle response, Frenching-good air filtration, and a bit of a wider spacing between the front and rear handles to allow for a range of bars being comfortably used. Also, a HIGH flow muffler that's quiet; it can be done, I have some...

64xx to 79xx fits that bill with an OE HD or AM maxflow type filter. Got them too to 84xx

I recall someone weighing the pop-up and it was actually lighter than the piston it was replacing. I've got one in my 029/390 and it doesn't have noticeable vibes.

My 029 is considered a 'great' saw by everyone that tries it - it should be for all the Gawd Damn work I had to put in it. Muffler mod, homemade filter (nylon mesh would have been easier), 390 jug, pop-up, ignition advance, re-jet the carb, upgrade the oil pump, re-tune the de-comp, 066 coil with 4 degree retard on starting, new bearings and seals and a lightweight laminated Narrow Kerf bar that transformed the handling (and added another 15% cutting speed).

Yeah, the 290 can be fixed up to be a respectable 64cc saw, you just have to be willing to do that much work. If you're an 'enthusiast' that likes to do your own work, then it can be a good project. If you're not into modding engines/saws - then for Gawd's sake sell that POS and get a decent saw.

If your a stihl guy get a ms361, husky 357/359 or a 562, no wrong answer, all have great AV and you wnt have rubber arms at the end of the day.

They aren’t that bad! 660’s with a little time on them are fine,the mounts soften up a bit. And a lighter grip helps too.

*B-S..... I ran hard and bagged soft mounts. Little difference when your bucking 6-7 hours. One day is quite enough. Three day is brutal on my left forearm. Yes, it has been rebuilt long ago. The arm, not the saw.
