He was talking about boring the heart if I'm not mistaken, but on small trees making a bore cut to se the hinge can also be a wast of time or difficult if it's very small. Coos Bay(triangle cut) is used by some on those.
But I'm more of a hack than that @Woodpecker guy, but I get them on the ground, and people pay me to do it .

I usually just start at the top and cut them until they look like a stump. Nothing special just basic tree work.

Might be as simple as round log rules, out here I can’t trim flute without getting hit for deduct it’s either take a cut off or leave it.

Mills and veneer buyers prefer flares rounded here. It actually adds up to allot of money to be gained by doing so in a years time. They load better, as far as fit. In grade and veneer cutting above the flare would result in a 12" tall stump in some cases. And the veneer buyers pay more for pretty, cleaned up logs
