8 were elm, not the nice red or American elm...the water was quite literally running out of them as we bucked them to length in spite of the fact we been in drought like conditions for about 6 weeks. One was hackberry the would have been nice to save but it would have been in the way for the last two/three to fall. By that time of the day we were no longer interested in saving any trees, just getting it done. The three in the back corner (four if you count the elm with a double lead) were actually the neighbors who wanted them all down including the hackberry since he was tired of picking up after them.

Some decent sized (for around here) ash. Decided to give myself a challenge and only use a 16" bar, both trees were 20" at the stump. Felt way more intense than it actually was this way. But my work ended up not being as neat as normal.

The ash die back is beyond containment here now.

Only some big strong trees seem to not be getting it, as you can see in the background. Some trees get it and seem to be able to fight it. Most die within a year or even a few months.

Picked up a load of sawmill red cedar last week. Every color on that stump is in these boards.

The tree today was a 20" vine infested dead Ash that was leaning the wrong way and had to be roped and pulled.

Wood was very solid, and there was a good amount of it, and it will be good to use this year!

The 462 w/24" bar did the felling and larger bucking, 261 w/18" bar did the limbing and small bucking, and my 10 mm 044 w/20" bar did the rest of the bucking, just to give it some run time!

I did kinda dodge a bullet today.

The chainsaw paints I ordered came in, but I did not like the fit, so I'm returning them for another size. Luckily, I wore my canvas paints I always wear when I cut. After I reached to cut a limb at an awkward angle with the 261 I let off the trigger and lowered the saw. Guess the chain had not stopped yet, but luckily even though it got my paints it did not break skin!

Guess I'll start wearing those chainsaw paints when I get them!

Another ash done it by the emerald ash borer. The first photo was from early this year when we took down another victim to the borer, they had moved the LP tank before we started today. Hard lean right towards the house.

This is what it looked like when we started today.

To make sure things went our way, we put a cable up high and hooked it to a large tractor.

That didn't take long.

I put the SP125 to good use today. The 36" bar was fully engaged for the majority of the trunk.

This was was pretty dead and had some rot at the base.

Nice job, very rare for us to see any ash over 2' around here. It is a shame they are all dying. Up at my property in the Catskills they seem to still be doing well … but I have my fingers crossed they are not just on delay! 30-40% of the larger trees on my 50 acres are Ash.

The property was hit by a tornado a few decades ago, and most of the new growth seems to be Black Birch, replacing Black Cherry and Ash.
