I don't think Fiskars axes are made for banging wedges Mike. Old skool traditional is better.

I remember hearing that a few years back, when I got my Fiskars, but I never tested it out. I use a 4 lb sledge to run in my wedges. I'm not a logger or anything though, so I'm not packing things out in the woods.

The way the Fiskars are put together, they are made to use the force one way. The way of the ax face. They are not intended to be swung poll first. Much less strength with the polymer. Many reports of the handle/head breakage when used to pound wedges.

My brother has a few acres in Garrison he is trying to sell. He told me a tree fell across his driveway, and another dead one needed to come down. He did not know what kind they were.

I packed a few saws and took the trailer just in case any of it was good firewood.

There was a large Black Locust across his drive, and another smaller dead one standing nearby.

They became firewood!

Then he tells me that is NOT the dead tree he was talking about, there was a much larger dead Hard Maple further down the driveway. It was well over 30".

I asked him why he did not tell me it was so big, I would have brought bigger saws with bigger bars. He told me he did not remember it being that big. Then, with tongue in cheek (it has been dead for a long time) he said "it must have grown"!

So, my MOFO 462 (24" B+C) got the call. After making the felling notch, I notched both sides to reduce the width of the hinge.

All the dead limbs up above made me nervous, but it came down clean! That 462 did a great job!

I know this.......all you guys running these low deck utility trailers are going to cost me whatever they run nowadays. My back would be so thankful for a low deck trailer.

If you ever build some outdoor stairs black locust is the ticket.

The trail crews like to use Black Locust for bridges. The joke is "Black Locust does not last forever, but it will last one day longer than stone"!

I remember the old guard rails that had white wooden posts and 3 strands of wire ... the posts were Black Locust. I hear the portion under ground will last longer than the portion above ground ... different than most woods.

That one came from TS. It is the 5.5' X 10' model, and has a 3,500 lb axel. I'm happy with it so far.

Much more capacity than the 5 X 8 trailer I used to have.

Any bigger and it would have to have brakes ... a whole new price range!

I've got pretty spoiled in recent years, because all my trees have come from in town and I can just buzz over with my forklift and pick up the big pieces and bring them home, but now that I'm 13 miles from the house, with these locust trees I'm cutting up, it would be nice to just roll everything up the deck. Especially the big pieces. I'm going to have to go to our trailer dealer and see what he has in that size.

I wish I had a forklift! My biggest equipment (other than my truck and trailer) are my ATV and my wheelbarrow!

I have rolled some huge Oak rounds (3') into my trailer in the past, and some decent size Ash ones last year (28").

I use it for my real job, so it pulls double duty. It died once and the guy I help sold it to me for scrap price at the time and if I could get it going then good for me. I spent 200 bucks fixing it and it's kept going ever since pretty much. It's an old Case 580CK from the late 60's. Little 4 cylinder gas motor and it's supposed to lift 4k, but I wouldn't try to lift that much with it. The mast is getting pretty worn out and the cylinder leaks, but it's still going and saving me a ton of back ache. I'm pretty fortunate to have it and appreciate it.

Here's a tree I did today. Honey Locust with a few thorns here and there. About forgot to get a picture and already started limbing it. I used the 3120, just so I can get some more time on it, to get it broke in. 36 inch bar and it was about 4 inches shy of going the full width.

Sucks that for some reason after I cut this down, I couldn't get the 3120 to start the rest of the day. I hope it just got flooded maybe. Not real sure. Started up great before the tree. 5 pulls on choke and 2 or 3 off choke and it fired. No matter what I tried it wouldn't go afterwards. I'll mess with it later and see if it goes. I was in a hurry so I didn't spend too long on it. Edit: Just looked and the plug was wet. So that's the problem.
