Smallish red oak from today. When I use a conventional this is how I usually do it. Small face, the little bit of relief cut in the face sorta acts like a block face in that it allows flex and clean breakage of fibers. Just face it and back it up. Works on hard leaning push or pull trees as well. Allows a guy to leave a thicker hinge without ripping fibers out of the butt log. Mason, try it out man

so how did you cut this? Did you bore in vertical

It looks like you purposely undercut your face cut. Which is usually something you avoid doing... but I can sort of see how it would work for certain situations. You just have to pay attention to not cutting past your undercut when setting the hinge ;). Like anything different ways to skin a cat I guess.

When making face cut just go 1" or so deeper into the stump than where the back and under cut will be. I done another today and left a little more hinge on one side to pull it 60° or so off lean. 20201216_124642.jpg

Like I've said it's not something I use all the time, more often than not I don't use a hinge or face. But in hardwood its just another useful trick. Keeps the fiber pull out of the stump instead of the log

Better fuel economy? Noise?
Fuel economy. I had a dual port on the front, and it ran similar to the first one I had. It blubbered and smoked more. Nothing extreme, but this one just runs better to me without that dual port. I haven’t tried a port on the side though. I think the front port didn’t have enough back-pressure.
This is the only saw that I have ever preferred stock as far as mufflers go. But I’ll have to experiment with it some more.

Makes sense to me. A saw isn’t really faster when your buddies are still cutting wood while your filling up. Maybe that isn’t a good analogy though. The amount of wood cut per tank has to be figured in too I guess. A compromise has to be found between the two.

With a front port (or too much porting anytime) sometimes a saw just burns more fuel w/o any real improvement in power.

I opened up the muffler cover on a Asian 440 Big Bore and that is exactly what happened, saw did not run any better, but sucked fuel like crazy.

Replaced it with a stock cover and it ran fine and got good fuel economy. Bigger is not always better.

What works, or not, often depends on the porting, or lack thereof. Things work better when they are in sync.

For sure. Wood type and size, terrain, and so much more affect my choice for the most productive saw setup, and part of that is fuel economy. Like you said, you can’t have it all, so a compromise needs to be made.

How often do you need to clean the air filter on a 500? Is it about the same as a 460/461, or did they improve it?

The clean air filter tech is one of the things I really like on my 462s and 261.
It’s the same filter as a 661, but it doesn’t seem to pack quite as bad. I run it with an Outerwear pre-filter, and I get all day out of it, and then I put a fresh and clean filter on for the next day. If I don’t run the pre-filter, I might tap the filter out a time or two during the day depending on the conditions.

What are the reasons u like it more than the 462/572?

I like the power and torque for sure, especially compared to the 462. And it’s lighter than a 572 by a smidge. But I do wish the AV was a little stiffer, but I’ve adapted.
Can you tell a difference compared to your modified 461’s you guys said you usually ran?

My experience has been that the ported 461’s definitely run more “free” if that makes any sense. Definitely has more speed when cutting small stuff, but the 500 has been awesome in the bottom end torque. But I haven’t been doing any special testing or anything, just everyday use. But I haven’t really ran the 461 much since I got this 500. I like it.
