I know a lot of years ago some Australian eucalyptus hardwoods were taken to California that looks a lot like red gum if it is when it's green extremely heavy but a treat to cut but wait 2 or 3 years when it's properly dry hard as hell a PITA to cut and still very heavy and some of the best firewood you will ever get .

That's what it is, there used to be some large eucalyptus plantations around here. Tomorrow I'm going to cut this one up into firewood lengths.

Had a little bit of rigging with the portawrap, then just sent the top and came down and dropped the stick. Notch was a little shallow, it had a lot of rot in the back so we had a tag line on it and just took the back cut slow and pounded in wedges as we went. 40” diameter. Fun tree to cut and the homeowner was glad to have it down and no longer threatening the house. 5AF19328-1FA6-408F-B40E-80DF37D712C5.jpegC844C9D6-6102-4CFD-8D53-B36BAC6444EC.jpeg456E6E5F-3D78-481B-866F-FA04E0C22EAD.jpegF0B1C4EF-0708-4926-82D9-9C134ACD0BA7.jpeg4E3CEBE4-42D9-4EF9-825E-259D2FD444E7.jpeg

Smallish red oak from today. When I use a conventional this is how I usually do it. Small face, the little bit of relief cut in the face sorta acts like a block face in that it allows flex and clean breakage of fibers. Just face it and back it up. Works on hard leaning push or pull trees as well. Allows a guy to leave a thicker hinge without ripping fibers out of the butt log. Mason, try it out man

Is any technique ideal for every tree?

I don't do trees, but I've heard of some crazy things people have made them do off of the stump on purpose. Then also some of the oops too...

The last crazy thing I saw was 6,000.00$ in roof damage by a supposed professional timber cutter that had “years” of experience. I learned a lesson that day. Cocky ness and alcohol are not good combinations when it comes to timber cutting. I’m a pretty open minded person though, I always consider advice

That don't sound like a good combination for anything.

Nope ..... and no one technique will apply to one species either it is the tree and the situation together that rules the technique you have to use .
Well that is the way I see it anyway right or wrong and I am still here after 40 years .

I'll just wait till they fall on the ground.. or let someone else drop them. No real desire to do so myself.
