So…when you get into a situation like this where a “port job” turns into a week long project, what do you tell the customer? “Your $400 porting will now be $800? :p. There are multiple hours of extra time here and just at pt3 😳
That’s a lot of time-consuming work for $400 😀 … You could have easily cut up $3000 worth of firewood in the time it takes to build the saw … I’d say it’ll all even out in the long run with some models being less time consuming and some , like this version , taking more time.

Well, none of these guys who do this are getting rich…point of fact. But, the sheer amount of extra time, retooling, etc, etc that is going one in this case has to be taken into consideration. I sent a saw to Stumpshot Steve. He gave me his “porting” price via text. I told him, anything over and above that you need to do, add it to the bill. He did 😁. It all worked out great.
But, what I’ve been watching here is way, way past that, imo.

I think you are mistaken … there is an outfit in PA (Ripsaws) that charges around $350 to port a customers cylinder. You send the cylinder to them so with shipping it may be around $400 total 🤷- They advertise CNC porting and I reckon they machine all the ports in an hour or 2. While the initial expense (machine, tooling, jigs, software etc) is most likely out of reach for the avg Joe an industrious guy/gal could pull at least $150/hr or $6000/40 hr week - running 16hr days / 7 days a week would net ya over $16,000 per week ! I’d really like to see a comparison between the finished products in the wood : Ripsaw and Tree monkey 🐒

From what people have been saying, it sounds like Ripsaw wouldn’t stand a chance against a real pro-ported saw.

🤷, putting the saws in the same wood with the same bar and chain will tell a story. I haven’t run any ripsaw product nor a tree monkey 🐒 build tho I can say by watching videos the tree monkey 🐒 saw appears to be more robust in the torque department. Hard to say exactly unless it’s same bar/chain and same wood - too many videos with guys cutting in Ohio Speedwood” to know for sure 😂

I don't think aftermarket parts were around in 1989- 91 time frame when that saw was purchased from a dealer new.
Parts on that saw could have been swapped since it was sold.
With so many obvious flaws in that cyl I would personally question its authenticity…just sayin’

I have owned it since new, never been touched till I sent it to Scott, has been sitting in the loft of a hot barn in Florida for 30 + years. Florida heat will destroy any plastic or rubber. Its 120 F plus during the day.

If that's the case, I will pay Scott what he feels is due! It is no fault of his or mine, I sent a 400$ check with the saw and told him I thought it would need lines and probably a carb kit just let me know how much more I owed him. (5th Saw he has ported for me plus a 066 I purchased from him). No regrets Scott, is a stand-up person which is why I continue to use his service

it's all just modifying saws. doing the work each model needs to get the best results. if you're only in this for making money then you're in it for the wrong reason
I agree in part - however it Has to be a “gainful” endeavor otherwise what’s the sense of doing it? Thousands invested in tooling , knowledge gleaned thru years of the school of hard knocks etc - You have to make something just to cover the sandpaper, bits and inserts etc etc …
