Out of curiosity…possibly a fake/counterfeit cylinder? I’ve read some of them are pretty hard to spot.

That’s a lot of time-consuming work for $400 … You could have easily cut up $3000 worth of firewood in the time it takes to build the saw … I’d say it’ll all even out in the long run with some models being less time consuming and some , like this version , taking more time.

Well, none of these guys who do this are getting rich…point of fact. But, the sheer amount of extra time, retooling, etc, etc that is going one in this case has to be taken into consideration. I sent a saw to Stumpshot Steve. He gave me his “porting” price via text. I told him, anything over and above that you need to do, add it to the bill. He did . It all worked out great.
But, what I’ve been watching here is way, way past that, imo.

I think you are mistaken … there is an outfit in PA (Ripsaws) that charges around $350 to port a customers cylinder. You send the cylinder to them so with shipping it may be around $400 total - They advertise CNC porting and I reckon they machine all the ports in an hour or 2. While the initial expense (machine, tooling, jigs, software etc) is most likely out of reach for the avg Joe an industrious guy/gal could pull at least $150/hr or $6000/40 hr week - running 16hr days / 7 days a week would net ya over $16,000 per week ! I’d really like to see a comparison between the finished products in the wood : Ripsaw and Tree monkey

I don't think aftermarket parts were around in 1989- 91 time frame when that saw was purchased from a dealer new.

, putting the saws in the same wood with the same bar and chain will tell a story. I haven’t run any ripsaw product nor a tree monkey build tho I can say by watching videos the tree monkey saw appears to be more robust in the torque department. Hard to say exactly unless it’s same bar/chain and same wood - too many videos with guys cutting in Ohio Speedwood” to know for sure
