Got about 1000 bf of the walnut milled and under roof, stacked and stickered. Still have a bunch to do along with some hackberry and there will be more walnut to get at the beginning of next month.
More walnut… This was a short 30” piece that would not span the bunks on my mill. Ended up putting it on a 6/4 board with another one against the log stops and clamping it.
With regards to that cherry afore mentioned that was in log for long while .Most times although it might be dry as a bone and change color it should be okay .I have some milled about 10-12 years ago that is solid as a rock .Kind of like dead ash ,the outside sap wood could be rotten but the heart wood still be just fine .
Getting caught up here. Several weeks ago a guy came into work late on a Friday afternoon looking for a place to dump debris from a lot clearing job. I let him know I had a spot and picked out a bunch of small sycamores that were in his piles. Got about 225 bf of usable wood.
Woah. My first deuce was/is a Stude ‘62 A1. Trucks that survived in A1 spec and didn’t get converted to A2 are kinda rare. Mine had been turned into a civilian water truck and abused for a long time. No data plates…I figured out what it was by researching on Steel Soldiers based off the serial on the frame.
I would be interested, but I’m a long ways away.
Dropside bed is newer but also very handy. I’m very curious about it’s current configuration. I wonder if it still has the LDS-427 engine vs. the A2 465. A1s also had a foot starter, most had a larger or separately mounted tach…larger wiper knob from what I remember. Also would have had hinged mudflaps, but those would have gone with the bed.
I’ve been slowly moving my city girl wife further into the sticks. The next step is a “farm” so I can do this kind of stuff - sawmills, tractors, post frames, and high tensile steel wire fences.
Keep posting, I need to remember what I’m working so hard for…
