I thought I would create a thread about my adventures (and misadventures) with my band mill. I have a Vallee Green Monster with a 24 hp Honda engine that can cut a 35” wide log 21’ long. My milling tends to go in spurts as I need material for projects or decide I need to tackle my pile of logs.

Today I needed some cedar posts for a project so I got those knocked out. I also milled some elm and stacked and stickered some walnut I milled a couple of weeks ago.

A few pictures that I took.

The slab pile has been growing and I needed it out of the way. I advertised on Marketplace but had no takers. However, I did find someone at work who burns wood and would take them. I also had a box of woodworking scraps I gave him for kindling.

I did some tree work and clean up for a friend of mine yesterday. She told me I could have whatever logs I wanted, ended up bringing some cherry home. It had been down for a while so I was a bit concerned about how solid it would be. After milling it up I will be going back to get the rest. I milled it all 5/4.

I have been doing a bit of milling of late. The cedar has been laying around for a couple of years so I slabbed it up. My next door neighbor had dragged the maple to the back of the burn pile and I rescued that.

Seeing lots of splits and cracks and no end sealers. Do you bother or do you have enough material the cost isn't worth your time?

I am just doing this for fun and my personal use. I have more wood milled than I will ever use in my life so there is no need to seal it. I always have a need for small pieces for trivets and such, so it is not wasted.

If I did not mill it the other option would be to just burn it. This picture shows part of what I have to mill, I have other logs stacked I need to move and downed tress I need to buck up.
