I've used quite a bit of piano wire which I think now is called hobby wire. It does bend without breaking and holds it's shape.

It comes in a good variety of diameters. Sold in lengths.

Try hobby shops if you have any around you. The RC car and plane guys use it.
yep, ive heard it called music wire. thats what i use.

I always thought piano wire was the thin stuff mafia men strangled the other mafia men with.
It can be the thicker stuff too used in WW II do decapitate motorcycle riders when tied between two supports and spanning a road.

As most can figure out I love to joke around but on this I am dead serious.

In my area we do not have a huge amount of marked sled (snowmobile) trails. Most riding is on private land and across many farms. Much of which is without permission!! This is still cattle country with lots of fences. Sadly there is rarely ever a winter that some dipstick sledder does not lose his/her head to a barb wire fence.

It happens around the country more than folks know. Just across in Iowa the county marks out roadside ditch trails to help a bit but here nothing. Just a couple counties to the north in Illinois up by the Wisconsin border they do a real good job of marking trails. We also get *pretty boyes that think they can drive on the ice like they do up north.

I recently got schooled on how to anneal piano (musical) wire in order to work it and then re-heat treat it to original hardness and stiffness. It’s easy to do but not as simple as heating and quenching. Anyone interested shoot me a pm.

Hobby wire. o2 it's called, in 5/64 size (.078) mapp gas it, bend it, let cool naturally stays hard
Nice, I may have to give that a try. I tried a metal coat hanger first, didn't work, just flaked off when heating it up. I have used bicycle spoke, it worked pretty good, though still bends without heating. I may try the heating and then naturally cooling and heating and oil quenching to see what works best with this. I made a bunch so I have plenty to work with.

Cool, what size is the piano wire? Something you can get on-line?
