We had a series of break ins in my neighborhood a few years back,
I rigged an electric fence to the handle of the shed door. Mine was the only one not pillaged. A co-worker of mine was in law school and said it was illegal and I could get into trouble. My response was "Do you think the POS that was doing all the stealing is going to complain? He would be linked to all the break ins which included weapons and a large sum of cash that was stolen." Would've been felony charges.

Rocksalt … the good old days!

Unfortunately, now the courts will punish you more for doing it than you punish the thief!

^^^^this. About 25 years ago, a friend of mine came out of the local mall and caught a guy stealing his stereo. My friend started whooping his ass. The thieves' girlfriend jumped on my friend and he let her have a knuckle sandwich too. The police came and took the thieves to jail. Later that day or maybe the next, the police showed up at my friend's door to arrest him for beating the hell out of the thieves. The police told him, "If you agree not to press charges against the thieves, they will agree not to press charges against you!!!!" My friend was left with the tab to fix his truck.

Unfortunately Jeff, the law (courts) almost never work as they should.

I know from my own experiences.

I also remember listening to the tapes when my brother was preparing to take the bar exam. It started: "Some of you may be handicapped by having actual experience in the legal system …" In other words, real life and what should be are two different things!
