The Wood ID Thread ( or name this wood type )

[Hedgerow]

Never ever seen shagbark hickory around here. Seldom see other hickory, but it is around. Never seen white oak with the shagbark like bark either. Do see other species of white oak occasionally. As far as *s-wordwood goes, there is a plethora of that to be had. We have a limitless supply of elm, gum, and sycamore. Plenty of rotting silver maple too...Add bradford pear, willow, paper birch, and yellow pine to the *s-wordwood list.

I’m gonna buy 80 acres of oak trees somewhere near Mountain grove, just so I can cut them down..

Tired of this *s-word.

Nothing like diving head long into an overgrown picker bush, “hedge tree” just to garner 8 rounds and a buncha stick wood..

Yup. Cut a fresh pile in spring and next winter sure a lotta dust in the pile.

I got about a half dozen lizards in the wood barn now..
I think they’re multiplying.. and seem to be hard on the boring bugs.
The first 2 years after I built it, there was always a *s-word ton of bug dust in the piles..
Now, there’s not much after a year of seasoning..

It’s gotta be the lizards.. one of em is damn near 10” long.. and fat...

Now that the last cat has been run over in the road, the lizard population is blooming..

Never liked that cat anyway..

There's a lots to be said about a 10" fat lizard, that's fer sure!

East Central Iowa. Got a tree like I haven't ever come across. Seems to have 2 different types of leaves, bigger ones are still green and the longer thin ones are yellowish.

Basswood.

Basswood.

I put the pics up on the other site too and got several replies thinking it is a Linden Tree, which is a close relative to Basswood. Basswood here have much bigger leaves and bark looks a bit different.

Been reading more and apparently Basswood and American Linden are different names for the same tree.

Agree. Gotta be some subspecies or something going on. Tree in my pics looks a bit different than Basswoods on our farm.

I cut a few Linden trees. Very soft and pliable. Reminds me of a Birch tree with the pliability.
Heavy when wet, very light when it dries out...
Speedwood when you cut it.
