Yes, an injury while it is standing (missing branch) will direct rot into the core where it generally stays only rotting the red heart wood. Laying on the ground, they quickly rot from the outside in starting with bugs eating right under the bark.

Yeah, for such a good quality firewood with high density, them bugs sure can make powder out of a stick of Hickory quick. It must be delicious.

Yep! I've noticed that.
I once had oak and hickory stacked together and the bugs pigged :icon_domokun:out on the hickory 10 to 1 over the red oak!:frown:
Obviously very selective palates the lil critters have! LOL:razz:

Darn borers sure like hedge! Never could figure why they liked that hard stuff!
They’ll only eat it fresh cut it seems..
And they like that soft white layer under the bark..
Once it dries a little they don’t like it anymore for some reason.

Thomas is a little slow on the hickory uptake..

He lives in *s-wordwood county like me..

Good trees are rare here.

Never ever seen shagbark hickory around here. Seldom see other hickory, but it is around. Never seen white oak with the shagbark like bark either. Do see other species of white oak occasionally. As far as *s-wordwood goes, there is a plethora of that to be had. We have a limitless supply of elm, gum, and sycamore. Plenty of rotting silver maple too...Add bradford pear, willow, paper birch, and yellow pine to the *s-wordwood list.
