Nuts on an 026 filter are also part of the cover attachment design. 260 filter will give it more air flow but the nuts don't work with the cover. You also will have to clearance the 026 cover to work with the 260 filter in addition to switching out the nuts.

It does appear that the air filter does have pockets for nuts?

@ray benson , do you have an ipl for the 026?
Should be two of the normal 8mm nuts on the carb, the air filter has a resess to fit over the carb nuts on the inner half of the air filter which is held on by the two screws on carb studs. I’ve never seen an 024/026 or 260 that doesn’t have nuts holding the carb on and not the two on the filter.

Me neither.

Me neither.
The one I rebuilt just had two big fancy nuts on the air filter that also held the carb down.

Should be regular nuts also I’m betting, Stihl wouldn’t rely on a plastic air filter housing to effectively hold pressure on the carb to boot. Way too much chance of an air leak and also every time you pulled the filter to clean the carb would come loose and have a chance of not seating properly again . If you look at the inside half of the filter it’s probably has room to fit over the standard 8 mm nuts. The one 026 I have is from 1991 with a red lever and it has nuts on it and is 100% the way it was built because I got it new.

I actually have the saw at our place right now so I'll check that.

This is because the 260 filter has a tab on it for the cover vs using a spring loaded 1/4 tab that grabs a slot on the screws on the 024/026. They make a mesh 024 super/026 filter also that would work with the covers no trimming.
