Is it a 180 or 181? The 170-180 is not a stratto saw but I’m pretty sure the 171/181/211 are and I also recall my 171 having a full adjustable carb on it because I muffler modified and added some timing to it.

Yeah, I thought if I ever got a MS 170, one of the first things I would do would be to put an adjustable carb and a side mount tensioner on it!!

I did that to this one, advanced the timing and opened up the muffler a little too. Made it a fun little saw.

If you really want to have fun, drop an 8" 33 DL Milwaukee bar on it - no modifications needed, mates right up. I took scrap chain we had and made a 33 DL 3/8p .043 full skip chain for it.

I can’t think of any Stihl saws off the top of my head that don’t have ring gaps towards intake side, doesn’t mean that there isn’t but if you had to guess odds are intake side is the way to go.
I know some older saws (I think McCulloch) had some with floating rings where there was no pin to keep the ring from spinning. From what I understand the ring gaps aren't on the exhaust side to prevent them from getting caught in the exhaust port and sheering off. Also, it could provide a slight air gap correct?

Made me look again. The 044 piston I took off has them on the exhaust side.

Yeh, no pins on my one Mac 10-10. It's why you've gotta leave the little divider in the exhaust port.

I wonder if it was on backwards, the IPL shows intake side on the 044 (if that is accurate or just Stihl copy and pasting from other diagrams):

The arrow points toward them on mine. It points at the scoring I remember being on that side too. Funny this came up. Just yesterday I had an "Oh shoot" moment after I'd taken the top down on a piston and hadn't marked the arrow. Had noticed beforehand it was factory on the exhaust side and polished a little on the bottom of the intake side and went by that. Coulda gone by the pin location, but maybe not.
