This is what you need right here, I have this set and it works great.


One trick an old machinist taught me is, install two grade 8 nuts and thread them down. Using two wrenches, tighten them into each other as much as you can. Now, use your wrench to turn just the bottom one to the left. The top nut will keep the bottom one from turning so that the whole stud will come out. Or it will break.
Yeh, 2 nuts locked together is what I tried first with the bar nuts. There isn't enough thread to get the 2nd nut on more than half way.

You could try flattening the sides and using some heat. Or just get the stud remover.
Thought about that. Flatten the sides to get a better grip with the vise grips. Ruled it out because I know I'd get impatient and bugger it up bad. Stud remover isn't in the budget.

I got em. just needed to go from super tight to ridiculous tight on the vise grips. Took channel locks to get them to let go. 3 or 4 full rotations on each stud with the vise grips before they loosened up. Tank Department down at Stihl must've designed this.

And I just now remembered that if you pick up on the end of the vise grips after clamping it helps.

That makes sense. I've got regular length short nose vise grips and some really long ones that flex and don't hold that great. I think what I needed for this was the next size up, maybe a foot or so long.

What tool do y'all use to split a MS462 crankcase? Seems like a traditional splitter wouldn't work with the design of the case... I'm going to be combining 2x 462's with broken halves, together (once I verify they are of the same case design since there are two).

The only thing I was able to find, was a fella who used a 'knocker' that threads onto the flywheel side of the crank, but I wasn't sure if that'd risk damaging things...
loosen all the case screws and heat the bearing pockets around 300'F it will let go with minimum efforts.

Thank you for the tip! I'll dig up my heat gun and thermometer. Just got the second 462 today, and it's the correct case design.

Will the seals be salvageable, ya think?

Thought it might be. Glad it's at a good home. Watch yourself starting it. It got me once so I softened the edge. May still draw blood.
