Was there a factory recommended bar length, or did dealers just install a suitable bar for the region from the recommenced range?
MSRP usually includes the shortest recommended bar and chain to establish the most favorable price point. Anything else is optional and obviously reflected in an adjusted price, but at the dealer's discretion. They have a little more wiggle room on bars, chains and accessories to close a deal than they have on the units themselves. A decent dealer who actually moves some volume can usually go another bar and chain size higher (on smaller saws) or toss in a six pack of mix oil and some bar oil to make a sale. A dealer who won't deal a little on accessories to make a saw sale is operating on very thin margins (or just a prick) and wouldn't be a dealer I'd be relying on for quality service either since most smaller dealers earn their bread and butter in their service departments..., which actually allows them to deal a little on sales to acquire a new, (or retain an old) customer in the first place. There are obviously exceptions, but my rule of thumb based on experience is what you get at the sales counter is usually what you can expect from the service department..., but usually worse. If you're not receiving quality treatment up front, you're not likely to get it back on the bench. If a dealer won't bend a little on a new sale, find one who will.
