Let’s pay attention to them fuel containers people.

Client brought in an 024 that would only idle.

Blind squirrel found the problem.

Mud(?) clogger the strainer solid.

He had replaced the fuel line and in tank filter too late.
It does amaze me how much material those screens hold sometimes!! I pulled one apart a while ago...apparently was run without a fuel filter for a while. Had small wood chips clogging the screen up. Lol.

My first post in this thread.

I support my local Stihl dealer, I only purchase small ticket items for myself, but I gave them some third party traffic in the past.

I was there on Friday to check whether they stock sprockets that would fit my saws, to my surprise they do and they aren't that expensive either - I'll be getting a couple next week.

Well, while I was there they were restocking display saws, one of them was a MS462 - I took a couple pictures.

When I walked in they were in the process of replacing a huge Stihl flag with a Viking one, I said half serious that they don't have to throw the Stihl flag away that I will take it home with me - they didn't go for it.

Must be a typo on all three stickers, that is not how one writes Stihl . . . :p

5.4HP out of 52cc is great, Steel really knows how to squeeze power out of a engine.

Stihl chain boxes, part number 0000 882 5900
DSC08320.JPG DSC08167.JPG

I like them, each will hold two 3/8" 72DL chains, or two .404" 20" loops.
I also like the Stihl files, I've been buying them for a long time.

I got it placed into my hands like "I have this saw that won't run properly, could You take a look at it? It's a Stihl."

When I got it handed to me all I could say was "That is not a Stihl! It is a cheap generic Chinese saw, my time costs more than the saw."
I did take it to look it over, but I also pointed my (good) acquaintance to a listing for a 52cc generic saw priced at mere 60$+shipping.

That was the second Steel MS440 I had in my hands.
The first one ran OK, just needed chain sharpened and bar dressed.

I made a video of the second one, but I can't figure out what I've done with it.
If I find it I'll upload it to YouTube.

Stihl 048AV, still going strong despite the owner not being very skilled in chain sharpening.
That's my Dolmar PS-6400 next to the 048.

I thought You guys might like the starter assembly tag, it is in great shape.
I told my coworker he could get rich selling it, LOL. ;)
DSC08711.JPG

It was a two afternoon work detail, we bucked up about 11 cubic meters of logs.
The 048 did surprisingly well, had a nice sound to it too.

There was also a 041 present, but it didn't get used.
It was the saw of the guy that supplied his Case III tractor and large trailer for wood transport.

I have 2 048’s and 3 042’s but I need that odd size bearing and seal that’s discontinued. I would like to rebuild one of them some day .
What part numbers are those bearings and seals?
I'll check with my local Stihl dealer if there is any chance them being available still.

From what I’ve been able to dig up is no longer made im sure it’s possible to find a nos one. Last one I saw on eBay they were asking 100$ for the bearing. That was only one side so I’d have at least 150$ into seals and bearings. Maybe some day I’ll put the money out for it but not now.

I've only got one more PTO side seal left myself . The deal with the bearing is the fact the inside race is radiused to fit the radiused crank shaft stub .If I'm not mistaken the seal instead of being seated in the bearing pocket seats in a raised portion of the outer bearing race .Only Stihl could come up with a cluster f---- like this .Generally I like the products except for stuff like this .

How much raidius is there on the race? I guess I need to pull one down and see if there is a way to modify a readily available bearing to fit. Also what about trying to use a lathe and square up the radius for a standard bearing to fit? Just thinking of easy ways to save one or two of these saws. Of course might be loose screws on the case halves since that was common on this saw. Haven’t looked real close yet and any of the 5 I have.

One of my uncles always says it isn’t a matter of can it be fixed its a matter of is it worth fixing. He said someone made it from scratch with raw materials so it can always be fixed or rebuilt somehow just is it worth doing.

About the only way you could do it is with an ID jig grinder .The junction of where the power side crank stub meets the crankshaft is radiused which in theory provides more strength at that point .You can't cut a bearing race with a lathe even with ceramic cutters which will cut harder stuff than carbide .It would have to be ground with a stone .
I'm not sure if I saved an old bearing or not from an 048 but I'll look .
