So, do these really need all the little roundy things or will they stihl work with a couple missing?
Didn't Mark find one of those recently in his shop? Did you drop one there? You only need an even number of them, any odd ones are just extras.

Funny thing is that I haven’t seen any floating around after all the parts were cleaned and there was no indication they were missing before disassembling. Weird…
I’m quite sure they will turn up, just like at Mark’s shop 🤣

Clogged solenoids will fail "open, and cause a rich no idle situation in my experience, i would be looking for air leaks on a high idle m tronic
I threw in a new solenoid, and fuel filter on the 400c today, which solved the fast-idle problem!

While working on the saw, I opened up the muffler port, in the back corners of the deflector. I had read that opening it up on the front side of the muffler will melt the brake handle.

Also modified a 'west coast' style 660 clutch cover from aliexpress. It's a pretty good fit, although the oversize dogs don't quiiite align, so I'll probably work open the mounting holes.

Not quite sure why you’d want to add weight to a nice light saw with a half wrap.

Technically thats not a wcs style, thats a stock style cover for a full wrap saw...and not for nothing, having 8 different stihls (soon to be 9 once i get my ported 460 goodies from @StihlEchoingHusky ) i have never had any issue with any of the stock covers on anything... up to and including noodling with a 3' bar on a 661, so i cant really see the need for a larger cover on any of them....

That said, glad to hear you got it running well!

I was planning on full-wrapping this 400c, and thought this cover looked close enough to the OEM Stihl full wrap.

Although now I've got a 500i project saw coming in the mail, so that would make for a better felling saw...hah

Well the kit comes with everything. Handle, dogs and the big cover.

I've been reading up on 500i air filters, and am wondering what y'all are running...There's a blown up 500i on it's way to me, and it's missing the filter shroud, as well as a damaged air filter. Assuming it's worth a rebuild, I'll be needing a new filter setup.

Here are a few notes/products I've noticed:
· Rubber gasket under the foam center washer, to seal the OEM filter tighter
· Outterwears Pre-filter atop OEM
· Pool noodle slice, on the inside of the filter cover, to press filter tighter
· Oiled Foam units like 'westcoast saw', egan, and max-flow

Since I'll be needing a new filter and shroud regardless, the foam kits would all work out to ~$100. An OEM Shroud + Filter is around $70, so adding an outterwears + gasket will also work out to a similar price too.

The Egan and Max-flo's look like they have the most surface area

Nothing wrong with stock filter on the 400, forgot you had a 500 coming too.

I've had zero problems with the oem filter on the 500i I've been using. I do like using an Outerwears on my other Stihls.

Although, on the note of a 400/362 or 462 for that matter, it looks like Max Flow is releasing new filters for these saws soon. Noticed this on their site while looking at their 500i kit.

I like the Maxflo I have on my MM 500i. Absolutely nothing gets through. With the stock filter there were occasional fines that got through. I did the washer thing before the Max. I have a pool noodle slice on a 2nd 500 but haven’t used he saw yet.
