Morning folks. Finally got some snows to make it look a bit like winter.
Good day to sip some coffee and wait a while before the cleanup.

Looks like that 400c pleated filter was full of dust/fines... I'll be giving the saw a disassembly and cleaning tomorrow. Hopefully that's what the problem is.

Gave the saw a good cleaning today, and tried again, to run it. This time, without an air filter entirely.

Saw fires up and has normal throttle response, but the idle is still way high, running the chain fairly quickly...

Think this calls for a reset first? I'm just worried it's a clogged solenoid, running lean, and revving it for a long time could risk damage.

Depending on the version you have, the longest you will run full throttle will be 30 seconds. That won't be long enough to toast the piston. If you have a tach, attach it and watch it, if you run up to 14k rpm+ then yeah throttle back and check for other issues, like the solenoid or fuel system.

Clogged solenoids will fail "open, and cause a rich no idle situation in my experience, i would be looking for air leaks on a high idle m tronic

Thanks for the tips, y'all.

I imagine a pressure test on this saw to be a bit challenging, with the design of the carburetor boot... Is there a way to block off the intake without using a Stihl plate?

I have an MS291 on the bench and wondering if someone can tell me how to overcome the limiters on the carburetor adjustment? There is a large aluminum shield over the screws, and aluminum "plugs" over the screws themselves. It looks like the Stihl tool for pulling limiter caps (orange handle with LH threads) will thread into the plugs, but then what?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, I just came across this video, it should show you what you are dealing with on that carb and how to get the plugs out without destroying them (I think I tried the brute force method and it didn't go well).

Outstanding.

I am sure I knew about adjusting these carburetors with the 2mm hex key (at some point) but so many different models come across my bench I too often forget the finer points...

I like how just drilling out that one part allows for the entire mechanism to go back in just without the limitations. I had one carb I was working on and when I took off the limiters it seemed to affect the tension on the adjustment screws, possibly allowing the vibrations to cause them to move.

While finishing up today I found this on the floor.

0.130x0.260"

Did this come off the MS291 and if so, where?

Thanks,

Mark

I can’t think of any place on a 271/291 that would be and I’ve had a fair amount apart. Haven’t worked on any old 017, 009 or the like lately have you? Looks almost like a loose lower rod bearing roller from one of those saws.

roughly 3.3x6.6 mm...

No small saws have been disassembled down that far recently. Even more confusing is the fact that we cleaned up the shop on Saturday including running the shop vac everywhere. Either this pin/roller has fallen out of something in the past couple of days, or it has been hiding on the floor for a while and just got pushed out into the open recently.

The only other saws that went across the bench were a Husqvarna 345 and a Husqvarna 562 but we only had the clutch side uncovered on those two.

Maybe an alignment pin between case and clutch cover on one of the huskies if not a crank roller?
