There were a couple of guys local to me that were setting up their intake ports like that (I call it the Mickey Mouse style).

They stopped doing it when they found out it was actually making the saws slower than stock in the cut.
I used to open the intake as much as possible years ago. It actually amounted to lots of work for little to no gain. Wears the hell out of the piston skirts too.

Don't give up the ship .You could shave the base to gain some more compression .Put it back together leaving the rings off then measure the port and go from there . Just guessing I'd say stock would be some where around 99-100 degrees of rotation .Although I've never done it if you don't have access to a lathe you probabley could use sandpaper over a piece of plate glass but it would take forever ..For that matter you could use a gasket delete and gain maybe 16-18 thou .That gasket is around 20 thou .
Thank Al, im not talented enuff to do that, and not set up for it, but thanks

If the plating is good, I'd be willing to cut the base and squish for you.....but I doubt it would be a great performer even with more compression. Getting the exhaust as low as possible is my objective on the 066. The intake is a problem as well. I'd hang onto it as a "what not to do" conversation piece.
Thanks good to know,,, probably go the shelf route.
And very generous of you.

As most know the 028 mufflers are not laying around parts bins today. I found a front bolt alternative from farmertech that worked for what I wanted.

Just be aware that the muffler body you receive will not have nuts welded to the back side of the body.
Which is why I used my old muffler body. A nutsert or riv-nut might be a fix on the older 028WB ,the Super I have has the mounts caste into the case so no fix necessary. 20230914_152524.jpg

So I picked up a fairly clean 044 12mm, My question is can I convert the baseplate? Filter mount? To use the same HD2 air filters as my 461?

yes ! there are about 4 different base plates for the 044/046 saws ones for the nylon mesh,
ones for the felt, and of course the HDs the mounting /and anti spit baffles are different
for each style.

Thank you kindly
Hi there Hoser
got some part #s for your saw
filter base is #1128 120 3403.the flange is#1128 120 2201
the fiter,and carb box cover is 1128 140 1000
they list a knob for the carb box cover # 1124 140 9500
if they dont come with the carb cover and also a bushing 1124 121 9100
that attatches to the filter base if no included .
I always like to wrap a piece of breathable foam around the
circumferance of the filter pleats to prevent fines from
lodgeing in to the pleats deep inside the filter
I,m sure that in the ( beg for manuals ) thread they ( Ray Benson ) and others
will supply an IPL for the 044s that illustrates the
keith

Looks like a few holes could be drilled in that center section.................. 028 mufflers OEM are hard to find. I just looked on ebay and saw quite a few.
It's not a bad repop for 7$ , if oem are pricey.
I think the muffler could be opened up in a couple places.

Clutch drum was wore on the new to me 044 so I figured might as well do the clutch springs and clean in behind the clutch while I was at it. Zinged the clutch off with an impact, pulled a spring and it all fell apart in my hands. $93 dollars for a new oem clutch, the school of hard knocks has expensive tuition.

Any recommendations on a piston stop so I don’t repeat this blunder? I’ve used an impact on all my macs so I thought nothing of it.
I appreciate the help once again gentlemen

A piece of nylon cord or starter rope through the plug hole is a common piston stop. And nothing wrong with a rattle gun if it's dialed down for the task -- or a little cordless one. I use a 12V Bosch that seems to have been perfectly designed for saw work. Been using it for years.

12-18" of pull cord, don't pinch it off in the exhaust port, lol .
Sounds funny now that is typed out.
